Exclusive: Matt Damon goes sci-fi badass in the Elysium Trailer

First look at Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 follow-up

Elysium is the latest sci-fi actioner from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, and you can watch the first trailer right here.

Looking set to provide the same mix of thought-provoking concept and jaw-dropping action as Blomkamp’s feature debut, Elysium takes its name from a space station that’s home to Earth’s wealthiest inhabitants in 2159.

Those less fortunate folk stuck on the planet’s surface are constantly seeking ways of finding a better life in orbit, by any means necessary. Matt Damon’s Max may have found a way to emigrate upwards, but it’s not without its risks. He’s going to have to suit up with some pretty heavy firepower.

Watch the Elysium trailer below:

Damon looks pretty imposing when he's marching along in that exo-skeleton, right? And we get intriguing glimpses of Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley's characters, in amidst the gloriously realised sci-fi landscapes. And it looks like there'll be plenty of ultra-cool future tech to gawp over...

Elysium opens in the UK on 20 September 2013.

What do you think of the Elysium trailer? Could it be a dark horse in the 2013 blockbuster race? Have your say below…

I've watched it a couple of times and whilst it looks like it's going to be a well made film, the trailer left me a bit cold if I'm honest. None of it made sense to me or gave much narrative apart from a class issue. But I won't make any judgement on a couple of minutes of one second clips :)

This is the #1 movie I wanna see this year (Hobbit 2 & Iron Man 3 aside).

That looks stunning - this guy really knows how to do proper sci-fi. He knows how to use it to tell a human story (as he showed in District 9) which is the whole point of classic sci-fi. This film, Man of Steel, Sin City 2, Pacific Rim and the second part of the Hobbit are the ones I am most looking forward too this year.

The trailer claims its 2154 yet Totalfilm claims its 2159. Do they know about a sequel already?
