Max Landis talks Chronicle 2

“It’s a really dark script”

The status of super-sequel Chronicle 2 has been clouded in uncertainty for a while now, with director Josh Trank moving on to pastures new and John Landis claiming that the studio isn’t happy with son Max’s script.

Now, Max has taken the time to clarify his father’s comments in a chat with IGN, while also goving an update on the project in general.

“The report came out that they didn’t like my script,” clarifies Landis. “They liked my script. It’s just a really dark script. The question is more of ‘How do we all compromise to get something we want?’ And that’s an incredibly slow process.

Chronicle 2 is in an interesting place right now,” he continues. “It’s moving along. There was this whole announcement that they wanted to just do the same thing again because my father said that. My father is not involved in Chronicle 2. He doesn’t know the process, it was not his place to say that.

“The truth is when you have a movie that was as successful as Chronicle was, it’s not as quick of a process. There are a lot more voices coming in and saying ‘This is what the sequel should be’ because there’s a bigger expectation and a bigger fear of failure. And that’s really what’s going on with Chronicle 2.

“There’s no one at the studio who wants to make a bad movie. They all want to make a good movie just as much as I do. We’re not fighting.” Fingers crossed things stay amicable enough to get the thing made…

I remember thinking that all that was missing from Chronicle was a stinger at the end showing that SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER Dane DeHann's character was still alive in some government facility, setting up a classic best-friends-turned-nemeses superhero story for part 2.

No reason why that can't happen anyway, maybe Part 2 opens with the reveal that Andrew is somehow alive and he goes on the rampage and Matt has to "hero-up" and take him on again. Or maybe flip that on its head and have Andrew realise (with his second chance of life) that he can do good things with his powers and its Matt who turns bad? There are many other possibilities including new characters who encountered the strange item underground before the cave-in .... maybe others discovered it before Matt, Andy and Steve and developed similar or even different powers/abilities? I for one I'm intrigued to see what the sequel offers, Chronicle was excellent and a really cool take on the super-hero genre, I'm looking forward to this.

matt really needed to go back to the cave in, and open that place up.... it should have been in the first movie... not really much in the world that could stop him. him or Andrew.

I just hope that this gets so dark that it doesn't see the light of day. Sorry but it was one massive yawnfest.
