McG developing movie musical!

He’s got the rights to controversial show Spring Awakening

Terminator Salvation director McG has picked up the rights to the hit musical Spring Awakening, with an eye to developing it as a film.

As Salvation hits the home stretch, his efforts to find other projects are gearing back up to full speed and while it looks like the new version of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea is his top priority, Spring Awakening is certainly an interesting change in direction.

Created by Steven Sater and musician Duncan Sheik, the story finds 19th Century German teens coming to grips (ahem) with their sexuality in a tale that deals with masturbation, rape, abortion and suicide.

It’s not exactly the most studio friendly show, so for now the director is developing it independently, despite a first-look deal with Warners. Sater is on board to help shepherd it from stage to screen.

In Terminator-type news, the director has told MTV that despite what actor Terry Crews might have said about the subject, there’s still no final decision on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cameo in the film.

“As of April 10th we don't know if Schwarzenegger is in the movie or not; it's not clear. I can say that, he told MTV. "It's a complicated, delicate balancing act as of now. The jury is still out."

Could be a Michael Bay-style bluff. Could be truth. We’ll find out soon enough…
