MGM planning Tomb Raider reboot

Will partner with indie studio GK Films

With Lara Croft receiving a new lease of life thanks to the resurrection of the videogame franchise, MGM are looking to do the same for her big screen career by backing a new Tomb Raider movie.

The rebooted Tomb Raider game is currently garnering rave reviews and selling by the truckload, a turn of events which has convinced the studio that a movie version is worth another go.

Game developer Crystal Dynamics had already been working with GK films on a new movie project, and now Heat Vision is reporting that MGM is partnering with the smaller studio to get things up and running.

Development is being headed up by GK founder Graham King, with no director in place at this stage. No word as yet on casting either, although we’d expect Angelina Jolie to be subbed out for a younger actress, as the new game features a much younger incarnation of the character.

Cue a flood of excitable fanboy suggestions for nubile high-kicking actresses to fill those famous hotpants…

Who do you think should play the new Lara? Tell us, below!

i agree with suggestion of Jennifer Lawrence. She has shown great acting skills and her role in hunger games has shown that she would be good for this type film. Plus she does look similar to the new Lara croft I think :)

No more Americans doing British accents please. Agree with secondface on Felicity Jones or Gemma Arterton, Kate Beckinsale or perhaps Sienna Miller who made a pretty good action brunette in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (bad film)

Rebecca Hall is the perfect actress for Lara Croft IMO. Anyways it needs to be a British actress this time !!!!!

Selling by the bucket load? A writer for a leading magazine and website cannot do one bit of research? The latest Tomb Raider game WAS well received by the critics, but it has sold just 3.5 million copies. Not a total wash out but enough for the game's publisher Square Enix to say this week that it was well below expectations. It was also enough with other games to mean the company lost $100 million last year and enough to make their CEO step down.

Hayley Atwell perhaps? I think Jeniffer Lawrence is too obvious. I doubt many producers would want her in another franchise along with the Hunger Games.

I think that if you are going to reboot the Character entirely so you have a young Lara my pick would be Saoirse Ronan, proved in Hanna that she could do the action scenes and with ease and I think she is a great actor! Plus I don't think she would command close to the fee Lawrence would....although Jennifer Lawrence would be amazing I think she would perhaps detract from the character of Lara, seeing as she played similar 'strong' survivor women in Hunger Games and Winters Bone! I think Rooney Mara would do the role justice...but Ronan would be my pick.

If they choose an actress who's not English, Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish I have no interest in the movie.

What about Camilla Luddington who voiced and mo-capped Lara in the new game..? We all saw how successful it was drafting in a big name for the part just because they're bankable with the last two films...maybe going with an unknown is the way then half the film's budget isn't blown on the star's salary.

As much as i love Rebecca Hall, i think the studios would say she's too old. I'd love it to be Felicity Jones, Kaya Scodelario, Robin McLeavy, or a brunette MyAnna Buring.

Only in todays world would 30 be considered too old for a role. Andrew Garfield was 27 when he started Spider-Man.

Croft should be played by Lauren Cohan, Maggie from The Walking Dead... She's an Aussie, but a very English sounding Aussie... She would be perfect.

Jessica Brown Findlay from Downton Abbey. She has the youth, the looks, the acting prowess and the much needed English infusion that the character needs.

Jennifer Lawrence would be good, but they won't pick her because of the similarities to Katniss... Hunger Games fans will claim it's a total copy and blah blah blah, lets hope though.

SteveMcc did you see "The Host"? I don't want her touching another movie ever. Saoirse Ronan is only fit for the reboot of Police Academy.
