Michael Chabon working on John Carter Of Mars!

Andrew Stanton has hired the writer to revise the script

Wall-E director Andrew Stanton has hired novelist and sometime scriptwriter Michael Chabon to work on his script for John Carter Of Mars.

Stanton and co-writer/producer Mark Andrews have already completed at least one pass at the screenplay for the film, which adapts Edgar Rice Burroughs’ cult tale of a Civil War soldier who gets transported to the red planet.

Hollywood Gossip Nikki Finke slipped a mention of Chabon’s involvement with the film into a piece on him switching agents, and now a fan website has asked him about it.

“I’ve been hired to do some revisions to an already strong script by Andrew Stanton and Mark Andrews,” Chabon told the site “I wrote my original screenplay The Martian Agent back in 1995 because I wished I could do Burroughs’s Barsoom. So this is pretty much a dream come true for me.”

Chabon – who has penned the excellent Adventures Of Kavalier And Clay, alongside several other solidly geek worthy books – is not a newcomer to the world of film.

He’s been a working script doctor for years, working most notably on Spider-Man 2, which still bears a lot of his additions. And his books are all either optioned or have been produced as films, including Wonder Boys and the just-arrived Mysteries Of Pittsburgh.

Stephen Daldry, meanwhile, has been trying to get Kavalier And Clay on screen for ages.

Stanton is now reportedly ready to gear up casting and pre-production for the film, and is mulling a South Australia shoot early next year for the film.
