Rumours that Viggo Mortensen was readying himself to get villainous in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot may have been quashed, but new reports on the film’s villain have jumped up in their place.

Deadline and Latino Review both reveal that Michael Shannon and Edgar Ramirez are possible actors to play the film’s as-yet-unknown central villain.

Shannon most recently starred in HBO’s historical epic Boardwalk Empire, and received kudos for his Oscar-nominated role in Revolutionary Road.

Meanwhile, Ramirez is best known for his leading role in crime saga Carlos, and recently signed on to play Ares in blockbuster sequel Wrath Of The Titans.

No confirmation has been offered either way on who'll eventually get the part of Superman’s latest nemesis, but you can count on a press-friendly Zack Snyder to offer us an official statement as soon as anything’s signed.

Who do you fancy taking on a villainous role in the new Superman? Chuck your comments below...

It would be handy to know which villain we're officially talking about before we can decide who should play them. I know it's most likely to be General Zod and Zod is a great villain that requires a great actor to play him. However I personally would still like them to be a little more adventurous and creative by having someone like Brainiac involved.

Kid needs a blog desperately. :P All dalidab does is write lists down compulsively, I just skip his/her comments as he/she tries to list potential actor for every role in every forthcoming film, ever.... On topic though, Shannon is a creepy dude, best employed in an alcoholic/villainous type deal, he's got the chops to make a comic book villain credible. He has a wonderful set of bug eyes, if employed to good effect, terror should follow!
