Mickey Rourke will play The Ice Man

Portraying a real-life Mafia murderer…

Mickey Rourke has signed on to play Richard "The Ice Man" Kulinski in a film about the Mafia hit man's life.

After much wrangling about the casting of the lead, author Philip Carlo has finally gotten his way.

There was some controversy last month between Carlo and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who had the rights to adapt his book, The Ice Man, which chronicles Kulinski's (below) psychopathic history and more than 200 kills.

It seems di Bonaventura wanted GI Joe star Channing Tatum for the central role, but Carlo hated the idea, throwing in Mickey Rourke's name instead.

Cut to this week and the rights have lapsed, Rourke has gotten in touch and now Carlo has his man. "We hit it off beautifully," Carlo tells the New York Post. "We're producing it together. We'll shoot in the spring in New York, New Jersey and Florida."

Well, that's the plan at least. It doesn't look like they have the budget or any backing sorted yet, but Rourke does sound right for the role and he's certainly got more clout in these post-Wrestler days.

But is the life of such a sadistic, merciless killer really one that needs to be splashed across the screen? Guess we'll see how they deal with it…

I don't see Rourke as the "Ice Man" at all!

For a second there I thought Rourke was joining Ryan Reynolds in double-dipping superhero roles...
