Money's the Word

Sundance Update: Wordplay is the first big documentary sale and a dirty bomb drama explodes successfully...

After days of frenzied buying and deals being done, one Sundance category had yet to make waves: documentaries. While several docs have been hitting big with audiences, none have pulled in a big deal. Until now, that is.

IFC Films has grabbed the rights to Wordplay, spending $1 million for the documentary about New York Times crossword editor Will Shortz and the tournament he founded for obsessive wordplay fans.

Meanwhile, back in drama land, Lionsgate spent $2 million picking up Chris Gorak’s dirty bomb thriller Right At Your Door. Door follows the detonation of a dirty bomb in LA and a married man who decides to seal himself inside his home to escape a possibly toxic cloud.
