New character profiles for Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show

Get the lowdown on Marvel’s small-screen project

As well as overseeing all of Marvel’s Phase Two movie projects, Joss Whedon is also set to write a new TV series for the studio, focusing on a new cast of characters from peacekeeping organisation, S.H.I.E.L.D.

Whedon has previously teased just who these new characters will be, but TV Line claims to have the inside scoop, with a series of full character descriptions for the show:

Skye - This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident - with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.

Agent Grant Ward -  Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.

Agent Althea Rice -  Also known as “The Cavalry,” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

Agent Leo Fitz and Agent Jemma Simmons - These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies - she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

Whedon will be writing the series alongside brother Jed Whedon and his sister-in-law Maurisssa Tancharoen, with the first episode expected in 2013. We wonder how many of those characters will last the full series. Knowing Whedon, it won’t be all of them…

Not that I want a Buffy/Firefly reunion but surely some of those roles are made for Eliza Duschku and Nathan Fillion.

Nathan Fillon in the show is a no brainer but isn't he pretty busy with Castle ? As I've said before they need to include the occasional episode with Sam Jackson as Fury.

Please, PLEASE no Eliza Dushku. I'm looking forward to what Joss can do with this concept and I don't want it ruined by her perma-scowl.

The last two sound like the people from Item 47?

I wonder if the couple from Item 47 will be in the show, they should have a part somewhere in it. I hope it's not just agents all the time though, they need to have quite a few heroes in it throughout the series and at least a couple of heroes that are main characters. It'll be pretty bad if it's just agents on missions occasionally mentioning Iron Man and Cap't.

Lizzy Caplan (from Item 47) has confirmed that she will not be joining the regular cast SHIELD TV series. “I can’t really. I have my own show so I will not be a regular on the Marvel S.H.I.E.L.D. show. But I’m glad people are so excited about that. I think it’s a good idea.” Although she doesn't rule out an occasional appearance of course. Casting calls for the show are out for the following parts: Skye - This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident - with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm. Agent Grant Ward - Quite the physical specimen and "cool under fire," he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He's a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he's the kind of guy that grows on you. Agent Leo Fitz and Agent Jemma Simmons - These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other's company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies - she deals with biology and chemistry, he's a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

So, wishlist would really include Summer Glau (Althea), Amy Acker (Jemma?) possibly Liza Dushku with the odd guest spot from Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk and Adam Baldwin and any of the Whedonverse alumni we can drag away from their existing work? (James Marsters/Alyson Hannigan/Emma Caulfield we're looking at you...)
