New Dredd images arrive

Karl Urban rocks the helmet

A new batch of images have arrived online from 2000AD to promote new comic-book adaptation, Dredd, and from the looks of them, Karl Urban is going to make one badass Judge.

Set in the dystopian conurbation of Mega City One, the last outpost of civilization on Cursed Earth, Dredd follows the exploits of Judge Dredd, a notorious Street Judge afforded the power to arrest, try and execute offenders on the spot.

As you can see from the new images, Karl Urban has got the Judge’s lantern-jawed scowl down to a tee, and already looks a far better representation of the character than Sly Stallone ever did.

Director Pete Travis has also promised that Urban won’t be removing his helmet at any point in proceedings, a detail that hamstrung Stallone in his attempts to capture the character’s badass nature.

With a script from 28 Days Later scribe Alex Garland, and Urban being supported by co-stars Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey, we’ve got high hopes that this could be the project that finally gives the Judge the big-screen outing he deserves. He is the law, after all.

What do you make of the new images? Is Urban a good fit for Dredd? Tell us, below.

Urban is a good fit for Dredd but that helmet is looking less and less of a good fit for Urban

Tbh it's more in proportion than a bunch of the helmets I've seen in the comics. Looking good.

Whoa. HEAD-SHOT! That's a head-shot! Nice! I really hope this version sticks more closely to the tone of the comic books and the stories. Looking good so far. Let's not judge the man on the size of his helmet though please, it's very juvenile :-)

A lot of the comics, even the late 70s ones are really stylised and oversized. I don't know if it will work on film though. Hope it does. The rest of his armour looks pretty cool.

I need to see more of megacity please. Every image that has been released has been against sparse backdrops, and grey concrete. Obviously there will be a lot of post production and green screen stuff to do before the city comes alive, i just hope the trailer shows us some scope. The suit and helmet look good.

Never heard of Pete Travis. I'd never heard of Danny Cannon either. Is Dredd doomed to be directed by unknowns? Now, Paul Verhoven...oh no, he's already made the best Dredd movie. He just called it Robocop.

I wonder if Karlurbankiwi will be actually printed on the body armour in the film? "Well if they can't see my face for the entire film how are people going to know who I am?". I really can't get excited about this, even with Alex Garland's involvement.

I was a bit sceptical about this but from these pictures and the fact that Alex Garland is scripting it may be pretty good, have to say Urban looks pretty good as Dredd,he's got that scowl down to a tee!

Looks much more like it than the last one @badger86 I agree need to see much more of Mega-city One and the huge block wars that take place in it, oh and loads and loads of brutal head shots!

Personally, I think it looks a bit stupid. Such a helmet does not work without the oversized shoulder pads, IMO.

Def does NOT look like a better fit then stallone, for a start stallone fit his helmet and the front facing view of Urban pointing the gun with his helmet wider than his shoulders looks ridiculous! Despite how the comics looked, this is FILM! Good head shooting shot though, but not that impressive on a whole! I like Urban actually but this is not a good match......

The design of this film's helmet is similar to those of Bolland, Walker or any number of great Dredd artists. The Stallone version was like nothing that's been seen in the comics before or since and looked f***ing awful. However, Dredd (2012)'s a violent action film for grown-ups, so I think what's happening to that perp's exploding head will be of more interest to its potential audience than fanboy analysis of the relative proportions of his armour.

He looks cold to me - his assistant ( Olivia Thirlby ) looks more comfortable - Dredd looks tucked up and warm
