New images for The Dark Knight Rises

Plus Chris Nolan talks IMAX and 3D

The Dark Knight Rises has released a new batch of images online, giving us a closer look at the two men set to go head to head in Chris Nolan’s second sequel, Batman and Bane.

Several of the images have previously been released as low-res scans, but these are all shiny and new, so well worth another look. We particularly like the face-off in the image above, although the starey Bane image below is also pretty effective.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan has been explaining why he opted to shoot in IMAX rather than 3D for the final episode in his superhero saga.

“Warner Bros. would have been very happy [with 3D],” he says, “but I said to the guys there that I wanted it to be stylistically consistent with the first two films and we were really going to push the IMAX thing to create a very high-quality image.”

“3D is a misnomer,” he continues. “Films are 3D. The whole point of photography is that it’s three-dimensional. The thing with stereoscopic imaging is it gives each audience member an individual perspective.”

“It’s well suited to video games and other immersive technologies, but if you’re looking for an audience experience, stereoscopic is hard to embrace. I prefer the big canvas, looking up at an enormous screen and at an image that feels larger than life.”

He’ll get no arguments from us. The Dark Knight Rises opens in the UK on 20 July 2012.

I hope they don't release as much material as Avengers did before this comes out. After the 20 mins of behind the scenes stuff we can more or less predict the entire film. As of now we're still not sure if we've seen much of Rises' climactic battle. Is it the riot? Or is that from the middle of the film? When we watch Avengers we'll just feel nostalgic as the city street climax will remind us of when we first viewed all the different shots through press release.
