New synopsis for The Evil Dead remake

Sounds remarkably similar to the original

Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead remake has released a new synopsis, courtesy of Sony, and from the sounds of it, the plot will stick incredibly closely to that of the original.

We had initially heard that Diablo Cody’s script would recast one of the characters as a recovering drug addict, with the trip to the woods designed as a kind of cold turkey getaway, but there’s no mention of that whatsoever in the new blurb.

Check it out below:

In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin.  When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.”

All sounds very familiar, doesn’t it? Perhaps the various deviations from the plot are being kept under wraps for the sake of simplicity, but given that practically everyone knows the basic premise of The Evil Dead, it seems odd just to trot it out again in the new synopsis.

One thing we have been promised is gore, with Sam Raimi recently claiming the remake is “so bloody it’ll make your head spin”. Let’s also hope there are a few novel plot twists in there to keep things interesting when the film opens in the UK on 12 April 2013.

“In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film" - By the filmmakers only I think.

why would anyone care about this now that we have cabin in the woods? the original evil dead is brilliant, and should be left alone. then several other horrors set in a cabin turned up, none of them comparing to raimis original. then cabin in the woods turned up under the same premise and completely changed the game. i just cant see this being anywhere close to exciting. STOP REBOOTING CLASSICS.

I have a bad feeling about this. There is no way to improve on the original so why bother, why not just re-release the original on the big screen again so we can all re live the experience the way it was meant to be. When they talk about more gore that sets the alarms ringing and I just know this will be a watered down 15s at best.

Can't see myself being that excited for this seeming as we've been blessed with The Cabin in the Woods.

Mmm, agreed with all - Cabin in the Woods has somewhat dashed the hopes of this film, and nothing can beat the charm of Evil Dead II.

@zxcomplex - "There is no way to improve on the original so why bother"... If Raimi & co had thought the same, we wouldn't have had the superior Evil Dead II or the stunningly fun Army of Darkness. As for this remake, I'll reserve judgement until I see it and not write it off just because it's a remake.
