New title and release date for Planet Of The Apes sequel

It’s called Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes

Fox have made some big announcements regarding the sequel to last year’s runaway success, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, including a new title and an official release date.

The follow-up to the apes’ origin story will be called Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, and will be released in the US on Memorial Day, 23 May 2014. Rupert Wyatt will return to the director’s chair as Caesar continues to take strides towards his species’ ascension to power.

“You could start this story again eight years from where we left off,” said Wyatt when asked about potential ideas for the sequel. “The next generation of apes, those that have come from our protagonists, perhaps going in to a conflict with humans and showing real fear, in the same way as going into war for young soldiers in this day and age, telling their story.”

“Or how apes are taking over cities," he continues, "and being moved into human environments and having to interact with them and deal with things that are part of our culture and understand and evolve through them.”

Intriguing stuff. Additionally, Fox have also revealed an official release date for another big sequel in 2014, with the follow-up to X-Men: First Class set to open on 18 July. As with Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, the original director is set to return, with Matthew Vaughn bringing all his original cast with him. It promises to be a very exciting year...

Which of Fox's two sequels are you most excited about? Tell us, below...

He has to doesn't he? He is, after all, entirely responsible for wiping out all mankind

Didnt want to watch "Rise" as love the originals, and "Burton" remake left me sad for the franchise. However I did watch and faith was restored. Cant wait for Dawn

@ChrisWootton : That's right, James Franco is responsible for wiping out all mankind ... and so too is his character in the film :) lol ... RISE & X-MEN: FIRST CLASS were two of the best surprises last year, they were far better than I expected and I'm looking forward to the follow-ups ... especially as the same creative teams are returning to both franchises.

Ha I apologise to Mr Franco for any defamation of character.. totally agree, having the same creative teams coming back is great. I watched the extras on Rise and the director came across as really likeable.

Yeah, he's extremely enthusiastic and a big fan of the original films. He wanted to make a film that wouldn't damage their legacy but would add something to it. He has the utmost respect for what has gone before (and I think RISE showed that), so very happy he is back and I feel DAWN will be in safe hands.

Wish this was coming out sooner. Thought the first one was awesome. Almost erased that awful Tim Burton film from my mind.
