A new trailer has landed online for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, as a giant robot lays the smack down on a marauding extra-terrestrial monster.
The new film sees a futuristic earth besieged by a race of beasties known as the Kaiju, who have sprung from an inter-dimensional portal opened by a shifting fault beneath the Pacific Ocean.
Fortunately, mankind won’t go quietly, and has pioneered the Jaeger programme – the creation of a series of giant robots, piloted by neurologically-linked soldiers, designed to fight off the invaders.

There’s not much on show here in the way of character development, but in terms of showing off the film’s remarkable VFX and creating a sense of the sheer scale of the fight sequences, it does the job very nicely indeed.
Directed by del Toro and co-starring Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi, Pacific Rim opens in the UK on 12 July 2013.
