New viral video for Prometheus

Guy Pearce's Peter Weyland gives a TED talk

Prometheus has released a canny piece of viral marketing, in which Guy Pearce’s character Peter Weyland gives a TED talk (a non-profit organisation dedicated to the sharing of ideas) on artificial intelligence.

The video shows Weyland addressing a packed auditorium in the year 2023 (a few years before the events depicted in Prometheus are set), and giving them a rundown on the story of Prometheus, the man who attempted to steal fire from the Gods.

From his assertion that the Gods subsequently “overreacted” to the rather lofty conclusion that “we are the Gods now”, the theme of overreaching ambition is there for all to see, spelling trouble for the crew of the Prometheus in the following years.

Take a look at the new video, below…

Other key points to note are Weyland’s assertion that cyborgs will soon be indistinguishable from humans (Michael Fassbender’s character is a cyborg) and his promise to change the world. We still don’t know what his Prometheus crew are looking for, but it’s clearly something that will have a huge impact on civilisation.

Pearce is both charismatic and menacing throughout this new teaser, and hopefully we’ll hear more from the slippery businessmen in the coming weeks. In the meantime you can check out the Weyland Industries website, another part of the film’s viral campaign.

Prometheus opens in the UK on 1 June 2012.

What did you make of Pearce's performance? And how will his character attempt to change the world? Theories below, please.

I said it the other day I know.... Without trying to sound too geeky.. The original spelling of the Company's name was Weylan Yutani (note that there was no D in the name). At no time in Alien nor in the portfolio was the name of the Company spelled with a D. This was changed to "Weyland-Yutani" in Aliens. Is this one of those times where everyone just keeps going without acknowledging there's a mistake?

Racking my brains trying to think who he sounded like and I realised --- It's John Hurt! Cool impression and nod to the original film!

Also Chris, it's a Retcon the 'Weylan' 'Weyland' thing, it was originally based on British Leyland anyway and Cameron thought it sounded better. Plenty of franchises add details and pretend like they've always been there, it's not that big of a deal.

Also, "Weyland Yutani" was featured more prominently in Aliens - so it makes sense to keep the "D". @ChrisWooton - still can't believe you think Aliens is a bad movie....shame on you!

i don't recall Weylan/Weyland being mentioned in Alien. Don't the crew just refer to them as "The Company"? Maybe there's signage in the ship somewhere ... I feel a screening coming on! Good geekery from you if you're right tho @ChrisWootton :)

He is right, but its easy to miss - hence why keeping akin to Aliens' version make sense.

:) If you can't put it into your own words then use the words of the guy whose idea it was. apo1978, I've never said a bad word against Aliens.. best sequel of all time and on a par with Alien in my opinion.

I'm actually beginning to look forward to this film more than Dark Knight Rises (though not quite as much as The Hobbit).
