Nic Cage ditches The Green Hornet

He couldn't make a deal…

And so the endless cycle of bad luck that is The Green Hornet's quest to the screen cranks out another problem - Nic Cage won't be playing the villain.

He'd been in talks for some time, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, he couldn't come to terms with Sony on a deal to fill the role so Seth Rogen and director Michel Gondry have to start the hunt anew - even as the movie continues shooting.

At least Rogen, Cameron Diaz, Edward James Olmos and Jay Chou are still all aboard. This week, anyway…

Cage, meanwhile, is preferring the idea of back to back vengeful heroes, signing on not just for Patrick Lussier's action pic Drive Angry (man goes in search of the people who killed his daughter), but now also for Hungry Rabbit Jumps.

That one finds him as a man who hunts down the men who attack his wife - but in the process, falls in with a dangerous underground vigilante organisation.

And he must love New Orleans - after shooting Bad Lieutenant there, both of the new movies will film in the city…

So who should replace Cage as the Hornet's villain?

A lesser known non-US actor. Using somebody US audiences don't know lends more gravitas to the villain---something many producers don't grasp. Maybe Daniel Auteuil ( France ) or Ray Winstone ( UK ). There are plenty.

Nicholas Cage not being in a movie makes it marginally more likely that I will watch it. As for casting the villain, is Gary Oldman free? I have no idea what this villain is supposed to be like, I just love Oldman.

Cage dies generally put me off watching a film but irritatingly he seems to pull something great out of the bag every now and then so that I can never rule him out completely.

I think Chris Pine or Sam Rockwell would be good for the role.
