Paul Giamatti to play Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Felicity Jones also in talks

The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s cast just gets starrier and starrier, with THR reporting that Paul Giamatti is in advanced talks to play secondary villain, Rhino.

As you might have guessed from his name, Rhino is one of the more physical villains in the Spidey universe. A Russian gangster, he underwent a lengthy process of genetic manipulation to give him his super strength, and also wears an armoured suit as a little extra boost. The cheat…

While Giamatti's not short on snarling charisma, he's hardly got the most intimidating physical presence. Will we see an alternative take on the character? Or will the sequel's plot take inspiration from Flowers For Rhino, a comic-book story that explored his sensitive side by boosting his intelligence.

On top of Giamatti’s introduction, THR also reports that Felicity Jones is in talks to join the cast in an unspecified role, which has naturally set tongues wagging as to who she might be playing.

Fleeting love interests Liz Allan and Betty Brant have been mentioned, but the one fanboys really want to see is Felicia Hardy, otherwise known as the slinky Black Cat. Check out her costume to see why she’s so popular…

Directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will open in the UK on 18 April 2014.

This is starting to smell of (one iteration of) the Sinister Six... Who will be cast as Shocker?

That's what I thought too when I heard about Rhino's addition ... if ASM is to be a trilogy (I believe that was confirmed recently) then a build up to the Sinister Six could be on the cards!! The Lizard has already been introduced; Osborne, Electro and Rhino are in the second one; leaving the big reveal of Green Goblin in the third film along with two others. My bet is Mysterio for one, and either Vulture or Scorpion as the sixth member ... no offense @alexr, as much as I like Shocker, he's a bit redundant with Electro on the team :) I'm kinda hoping this is the route they are thinking of going down.

S6 could be cool if handled right.... or.... it could be complete overkill and end up a centre stage free-for-all like Spider-Man 3

Why not just stick the whole Sinister Six in there and be done with it? Multiple bad guys worked in Spider-Man 3 didn't it?

No offense to Giamatti, but this seems like a terrible idea... Dolph Lundgren would have made sense (he can pull off a Russian accent and all). I'll keep fairly positive about this, though. I hope that the next film really steps it up with the villains this time; Andrew Garfield was so great, it seemed almost insulting to pair him off against some as bland as The Lizard!
