Peter Berg talks casting Rihanna in Battleship

Exclusive: Battleship director on the pop megastar's acting debut

Battleship will be cruising into cinemas next month, and it marks the acting debut of pop megastar Rihanna.

Total Film recently caught up with director Peter Berg to discuss the strategic moves involved in bringing a boardgame to the big screen, and talk turned to the Barbadian R&B artist.

On the appeal of casting Rihanna in Battleship, Berg told us: “I saw one of her videos and she was really cocky and sassy, very scrappy. There was a certain inherent toughness to her.

“Everyone thought I was crazy but I put a call out and asked her to come in. She was funny and tough, a natural performer.”

Berg also suggested that he’d be keen to convert other musical stars into actors:

“I’ve found that a lot of singers inherently love to perform; I guarantee you that Bono would be a great actor if we found the right role.”

Battleship opens on 11 April 2012.

I'm sure she's really convincing - let me guess, there will be several scenes where she will be more than capable of beating guys double her size. Can't wait

Even if Rihanna does prove to be any good in this film, gets bitten by the acting bug and/ or gets cast in more films, she'll probably be typecast like mad. Not that this has bothered anyone else (too numerous to name)...

The very premise of the this movie is ridiculous, a film based on an old beloved board game. It will, of course, feature alien invasions and a pop star. The board game was just that, a board game with no story to speak of expect "shoot at each others boats." Why did they even need to connect it to the board game at all? They could have just as easily named it something else; naming it after the board game hurts credibility and is frankly laughable. On top of that, they have decided to cash in by putting Rihanna. While she is a talent musician, that does not make her an actor as was seen with many celebration meant to add star power ranging from Dane Cook to Ludacris. One needs only to look at the trailer to predict the quality that this movie will have.
