How do you shove your period drama into high gear? You get a respected director and one of the biggest current actresses to star.

At least, that’s the hope of Mary Queen Of Scots, which has now nabbed an April start date for the story of the fateful young monarch who grabs the throne of Scotland at the tender age of 9 months and ends up- when she’s out of nappies – challenging Elizabeth I for power over England. For her trouble, she ends up in prison for years before Liz has her head chopped off.

Hilariously, Variety has the writer (James McGovern) credited with penning Crackers. Yes, we’re sure Robbie Coltrane’s tubby TV police shrink was a little mad, but we think you’ll find it’s Cracker…
