The Master, P.T. Anderson’s first film in five years, has released a new trailer, in which Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams join Joaquin Phoenix for this tale of a faith-based cult in ’50s America.
Following the oddly unsettling tone of the first trailer, the second introduces Hoffman as the titular Master, a charismatic intellectual whose belief system begins to grow in popularity as his celebrity increases.
Phoenix plays a damaged and confused drifter who stumbles across Hoffman’s character by chance, before falling under his spell and eventually becoming his second in command.
Take a look at the new trailer, below...
Hoffman and Phoenix both look on top form here, the former blending menace with charm while the latter builds on that first trailer with another performance of coiled-spring intensity. Throw in Jonny Greenwood’s wrong-footing score, and you’ve got something that looks both exciting, unnerving and genuinely original.
The Master will open in the US on 12 October 2012, with a UK release date to be confirmed. If both Anderson and Phoenix have been away for a while, it looks like they’re about to return with one hell of a bang.
