Pinocchio gets his own live-action update

Bryan Fuller will write new adaptation

Pinocchio

Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller is about to make Pinocchio into a real boy – by scripting a live-action version of the age-old children’s novel.

Milk producer Dan Jinks has revealed that he got the idea for the project after the success of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland re-imagining (it’s now taken an easy $1bn).

“I think we’ve found a fresh approach that’s going to be very entertaining,” he tells Variety. Will Pinocchio wear a thong this time? Oh wait, that’s already been done…

Pinocchio was most famously brought to the big screen by Disney back in 1940. It was their sophomore feature, and remains one of the defining versions of Carlo Collidi’s 1883 yarn.

We wonder if Mickey Rooney, who appeared in a 1957 TV musical version, will be invited back for this new live-action re-enactment.

Or, for that matter, if director Francis Ford Coppola – who attempted to get a Pinocchio adap going in the 1990s – will be interested in returning to the story. Now that could be very interesting indeed.

Do we need a live-action Pinocchio? Or will it just end up being wooden? Debate below…

In cinemas this week…

Didn't Spielberg already do this with AI and depress the hell out of us in the process!?! "In a frozen future organic robots can bring you back to life but for just one day..." Yeah, thanks for that!

The Adventures of Pinocchio was released in 1994. It was live action. The question should therefore be 'Do we need another live-action Pinocchio?'. Answer - Yes, if done right it could be very entertaining.
