Predators might not be out of cinemas yet, but producer Robert Rodriguez is already eyeing a sequel, and claims that Fox have given him the go-ahead to start pitching ideas.
“(Fox) said, ‘Let’s do some other ones. What other story ideas do you have?’” Rodriguez told IGN. “Because it was like, let’s test out the market with this one. They really wanted it to be pretty contained, pretty scaled-back.
"They didn’t want to put too many of the ideas into it that we could save for a second one. So we could see what the appetite was, because the bigger movie would actually be what comes following that.”
So Predators was just the appetiser then? Apparently so according to Rodriguez, who went on to stress the scope for sequel possibilities within the new world he and director Nimrod Antal have created.
“(Predators) kind of sets up a new storyline, new location and world, and then you can kind of go crazy from there,” he said, before claiming that a second film would also form the third part of a kind of alternative trilogy.
“When I wrote Predators, it was to forget that even Predator 2 was made. So (with the sequel) all you would ever have to do is watch Predator and Predators, and you would have a little complete thing.”
With Predators proving to be a surprisingly non-crap ‘80s update, we’re with Rob on this one, and with a healthy box-office take in the bag, it’s no surprise that Fox are as well. So long as the Alien is nowhere to be seen, we’re all for it…
Excited for another Predators movie? Or should Rodriguez pull his head out of the past and come up with something new?

I am a huge fan of the Predator story in general but I am so sick of reading Rodriguez slagging off Predator 2. Listen pal, your film was mince compared to the first two. I even found the first Alien V Predator movie more entertaining and I HATED that film. Predators dosent even touch Predator 2 for storyline, action, originality or even any memorable scenes. Anyone remember the crazy gunfights from P2, or the train sequence, the uber-cool ending, the slaughterhouse scene? Nothing in the new one was anything like as memorable and I wont even begin to compare it to the classic original. Christ, Predators was just one long homage, I lost count of the little references/nods to the original. I spent the entire film wishing the projector dude would just put on Predator instead. It was all fairly forgettable and naff.

I thought Predators was good and I am also of the opinion that Predator 2 is only saved from the 'worst sequel ever' tag by highlander 2

Yet to see Predators. I recently went back and watched Predator 2, I didn't realize how cheesy it is at times.

Hey, if you do another sequel, why not write a real script this time, instead of just remaking the first one and adding ZERO new ideas? And while you're at it, give it to Neil Marshall to direct! Or even better, give it to John McTiernan, he'd do a better Predator movie in his sleep than Nimrod Antall did...

I enjoyed Predators (and Predator 2 for that matter) too, but it should have been sooooo much better. I am excited about a sequel though and agree with dalidab1982, in that perhaps Robert Rodriguez should have more control over the film.

Rodriguez's promises are much like what he wears on his head - old hat. I am a huge Predator fan and I was totally disappointed in what he said he would deliver and what he actually shat out. God awful cgi dogs, under-utilised predators, rip-off and ill conceived characters, the sword fight in the meadow like something out of a street fighter anime movie, stupid lawrence fishburne character that didn't make the slightest bit of sense (what had he been eating to be so well fed? - how could he use the predator's stealth tech when all he had was a helmet and its controlled through the gauntlet?... I could go on and on and on. Utter gash.
