Prom Night slashes into the US box office

Horror remake takes the top spot

It was a good weekend for slashers and dodgy cops as new arrivals Prom Night and Street Kings both did decent business at the US box office.

Prom Night’s remake of the 1980 Jamie Lee Curtis starrer targeted the teens and took in $23 million, while the Keanu Reeves cop drama nabbed $12 million. The new films pushed 21 down to third place, with the Vegas gambling pic adding $11 million to its $62.2 million total so far.

Nim’s Island, meanwhile, maintained the position it managed to take when the final figures from last weekend were published – meaning that it slipped to fourth with $9 million, but stayed ahead of Leatherheads, which did $6.2 million, and has made $21.9 million to date.

Dropping two places to sixth was Dr Suess’ Horton Hears A Who, putting it just ahead of Smart People, which entered the charts at seventh. The Dennis Quaid/Ellen Page comedy drama made $4.2 million.

At eighth, The Ruins snapped up $3.2 million, Superhero Movie grabbed an additional $3.1 million and Drillbit Taylor rounded out the top 10 with $2 million.
