Red Tails gets a new trailer and poster

"You shut us down, or you let us fly"

Lucasfilm’s upcoming WW2 drama Red Tails has released a new trailer that finally marries the film’s flag-beating, grandstanding dialogue to some genuinely hair-raising action sequences.

Anthony Hemingway’s film charts the story of the Tuskagee training programme, in which untested African-American pilots were shipped out to Europe to help with the war effort. Held back by sceptical superior officers, Red Tails will document the Tuskagee pilots’ struggle with adversity for the right to defend their country.

This time out we get to see Terrence Howard’s squadron of fighter pilots really get their hands dirty, as they take to the skies for a series of airborne set-pieces. We also learn a little more about their climactic mission (protecting Allied bombers, often at the expense of their own lives), whilst there’s an extended look at the spectacular train attack glimpsed in previous teasers.

Check out the new trailer below…

There’s still a touch too much one-size-fits-all war dialogue on show, with Howard belting out a torrent of inspirational speeches like an excitable life coach. However, when delivered in the context of the sort of blood and thunder action on display here, it kind of works.

Subtle, it ain’t, but there’s every chance this one could still turn out to be a stirring battlefield drama. Plus, Brian Cranston’s in it, so it can’t all be bad. Red Tails is released in the US on 20 January 2012.

And just in case you can’t wait that long, there’s also a new poster to feast your eyes upon. Again, subtlety is not the name of the game, as you can see from the tag line…

That looks s**t. I would love to offer a mature explanation for my feelings on the matter, a treatise on my subconscious perhaps, or a lucid diatribe highlighting the political, cultural and contextual mores within the trailer and their relationship to the zeitgeist that feeds my soul. But that just looks s**t. "Courage has no color" it says on the poster: barf! Would have been better to get QT to make this. He could have made it a blaxploitation/war movie homage, making the tagline "Courage has a color - and its black!" Could have called it Mo' Better Planes or something.
