Remake Royale

New Line snaffle rights to remake controversial Japanese sci-fi flick

Now, the local comprehensive was pretty tough when TF was a youngster but it was perhaps slightly less intimidating than the school trip in Battle Royale.

Kinji Fukasaku’s 2000 flick told the story of a futuristic government weary of the growing violence in schools. So, they scoop up a bunch of unruly ninth grade kids, ship them off to a deserted island and force them to fight to the death. Knocks spots off of an ASBO, doesn’t it?

The original movie was slammed for excessive blood spraying and lauded for some beautifully shot sequences, so it’s no surprise then that New Line Cinema has opened the cheque book and scribbled on the line for the remake rights.

No word yet on who might sit at the helm - but if eastern remakes shake your cage then you might be interested to know that co-producer Roy Lee is also being mentioned as a possible purse-string holder on a US remake of Chan-wook Park’s Oldboy.

Originality, that’s what we like to see.
