Rhys Ifans cast as Spider-Man villain

Joins Andrew Garfield as an unknown baddie

Spider-Man

Spider-Man got a girlfriend last week, and this week he’s found himself a villain in the form of Welshman Rhys Ifans.

Sony have confirmed that the actor, who is currently appearing in dope dramedy Mr. Nice, has bagged the role of the film’s main villain – though they’re not revealing which villain that is just yet.

“What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker,” says director Marc Webb. “ Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.”

In an official press release, Sony revealed that they were so impressed with how Ifans handled his role in upcoming Roland Emmerich political thriller Anonymous that theyasked him to play Spidey’s new adversary. Time to place bets on just who that will be.

Filming on Spider-Man begins in December. It will open in cinemas 3 July, 2012.

I'm made up! I think he's such an underrated actor. I've never liked the Spiderman franchise as every film was virtually the same and I just couldn't justify saving Dunce, sorry, Dunst in every final act! Looking forward to this one!

I'm thinking Vulture too; maybe an outside chance of the chameleon with his "good looks"?

I love Sam Raimi's 1st 2 Spiderman films and was looking forward to the planned 4th but I'm starting to come around to the idea of this reboot, which is based on the Ultimate Spiderman comics.(In my opinion, the best take on the character in the past several years.) I think that Rhys will most likely end up playing Curt Conners/The Lizard who I think is the Spiderman villain he is most suited to play. I like Garfield and Stone as Spiderman and Gwen respectively and hope that if Norman Osborn/Green Goblin Shows up in the new franchise, that they make him an actual Goblin like in the Ultimate Line, instead of going with the reject Power Ranger look he had in the 1st Spiderman. Also, it would be nice to see Nick Fury have a cameo in the film to build on the shared movie universe Marvel is building at the moment and it would make sense as Spiderman is sort of an honorary member of S.H.I.E.L.D in the ultimate line of comics.

"Superb" Ultimate Spiderman? No, no, no! Marvel only brought out those comics for the people who had only started reading because of the film. Those comics were horrible! On the topic of Rhys Ifans, the chameleon may be a good bet, but what about the jackal? intellegent, charming and some what evil. Plus he featured in a rather major storyline - the clone saga. Whatever they do, I hope the story compliments the cast
