Gervais Jesus photoshoot causes controversy

Rolling Stone turns down crucifixion cover image, prefers Rihanna

A photograph of Ricky Gervais wearing a crown of thorns and with a mic stand across his shoulders like a cross was rejected by Rolling Stone Magazine for use on its cover.

“This was done for Rolling Stone Magazine but I think they decided it was a little strong for their demographic,” the actor/director said on his Huffington Post blog.

Gervais admits that when he described the Christ-like image to Rolling Stone they asked for an alternative.

“They definitely would have gone with the alternative, but since I didn't give them one they went with Rihanna. Ha Ha. Fair enough. I stand by my decision,” the comedian added.

However, Gervais has asked Huffington Post readers to choose between the Jesus image and a picture of him made up as a clown with a gun in his mouth to be used as the poster for his next stand-up tour.

John Nolte, editor in chief of the Big Hollywood website questioned Gervais' proposed caption for the religious image: “Stand up for what you believe”.

"Doesn’t he mean for 'what you don’t believe?' Actually, he doesn’t. That’s why I call Gervais an 'evangelical atheist'. He’s one of those obnoxious non-believers always pushing his non-belief on you. He’s like a Moonie without the charm, flowers or airport."

Gervais has also faced criticism about new American TV comedy Afterlife, in which a man who doesn't believe in heaven meets God when he dies – the almighty being played by Gervais as a "wise-cracking arrogant, son-of-a-bitch" (his words).

"I can't win. The Invention Of Lying proposed an alternative world where there was no God. That was an atheist comedy too. Seems the existence or non-existence of God in my work has no bearing on whether it's an atheist comedy or not. It just is. Because I wrote it, right?" he told his official website.

Is this image too strong to appear as a magazine cover? Or should comedians be able to push the boundaries and raise questions? Let us know below!

So it still seems that the only people who still believe they should be completely immune to any form of p**s-taking is the religious folks. That pick is pretty funny, and he doesn't believe in the almighty which is why he did it, the sarcasm of it. These up tight overly sensitive people who are getting offended because he did this about Jesus, would they even be slightly offended if he did towards some other religious figurehead? No, because they don't believe in them either so that isn't as important. But that said, this is only news(if it even is that) because it's Ricky Gervais, a rather famous, proud athiest. As am I(minus the famous). Rant Over.

The day Ricky stops causing controversy is when he should retire.

Why would anyone care what John Nolte thinks?

Oh my god I can't stop laughing. The pic is bloody genius. Gervais is probably the funniest comic working today. Thank goodness there's someone out there that isn't afraid of "going there." He p****d all over those uptight actors at the Golden Globes and now he's p**sing on the mindless religious freaks. I love it. Rolling Stone has just shown their true colors by rejecting it. What would Hunter Thompson say?

So all the religious nuts can force their view on people but when you belive there is no god you get slated for it? It's a joke! Christianity is a joke, look at how much blood shed has been made in gods name. The photo is awesome! I'm pagan by the way.

I agree with Rolling Stone, Gervais has a real contempt for people with religion, he has an obnoxious arrogant air that makes him think it's fine to push his beliefs in other peoples faces. He needs a reality check, the Globes was funny though

"...the almighty being played by Gervais as a "wise-cracking arrogant, son-of-a-b***h" (his words)." Wow ...way to extend your range there, Richard.

I think Rolling Stone just didn't (like the rest of us) want to see Gervais with his shirt off, even if it has been airbrushed.

A little strong for their demographic?! ROLLING STONE? Are little old ladies from the south now reading Rolling Stone? Ricky doesn't push his beliefs on anyone anymore than religious people push theirs. He's actually exposing what he feels are facts, as opposed to Christians who actually try to force their beliefs. I don't see him going around knocking on people's doors with Atheist pamphlets. It's through his comedy that he is exposing the ludicrousness of religion.

WOW! Can anyone take a joke? Ricky Gervais is one of few who does not play by the mainstream's rules and he is insanely funny. I hate that Rolling Stone cares so much about making money that they no longer make statements which make people think! No lets put Rihanna on the cover because " god " forbid anyone have a thought which is different than yours. Ricky Gervais is just presenting the alternative to the bible th*****g c**p that gets constantly shoved down our faces. KEEP DOING WHAT YOUR DOING RICKY GERVAIS!
