Ridley Scott talks Prometheus’ 3D

Exclusive: “It's kind of bizarre… and absolutely staggering.”

Total Filmsat down with Sir Ridley Scott recently to talk about his long-awaited return to the Alien universe, Prometheus.

And while we’re incredibly keen to see just how much Prometheus ties into the Alien mythology, there’s another aspect to the film that’s making us more excited than a face-hugger who’s just bought a first-class ticket to Easter Island – it marks Scott’s first tangle with 3D.

So we decided to ask Sir Ridley how he found the 3D process, and what we can expect from Prometheus’ 3D sequences…

How was it working in 3D?

I'm kind of naturally visual anyway, that's where I come from. And you're working off superb 3D screens, which are on the floor, and are really big. It was just wonderful.

I was shooting on 3D, then seeing it on the floor. It was easy, I must say.

Do you push it in a way we haven't seen before?

Well, I mean, yeah. You only want to push it so far, before it becomes arrows popping out of the screen and stabbing you in the eye. You use it for visual effect.

Is it more immersive, giving depth?

Yes, yes. And you can do that afterwards, by the way. I'm actually decided right now how deep to make it on certain sequences.

So you can literally, as it were, twiddle a knob, and the depth will increase. It's kind of bizarre, but there it is. Technologically it's absolutely staggering.

I was working with MPC in London, looking after almost 1,300 big FX shots, and every night they would pipe through shots to a big screen in my office in Lexington Street; I would sit there watching a sequence that had just been graded or refined in perfect 3D. Really amazing.

Prometheus is out 1 June and we can’t bloody wait to see it.

Will you pay to see Prometheus in 3D? It's visual genius Ridley Scott's first foray, surely it's worth it?

Try This...

I cant wait to see it either. IN 2D! Good story telling and amazing digital effects dont need rubbish 3D. Filmed or retro, none of it works well enough and ruins the cinema experience.

Also agree, 2D/3D its all good! i just hope they make it an R rating because when alien came out they gave it an R rating yet the film has very few grisly scenes, i can only think of 3. Chest burst, ash's and parker's death. Apart from the first they were not worthy of an 18 certificate. If Prometheus is R rated surely its got the gore to back it up and hopefully the scares.

Hasn't, like, the whole of America come to not like 3D? Who, in that case, is more excited than a face-hugger who’s just bought a first-class ticket to Easter Island? Some people really do just write ANYTHING.

3D, huh? I would have rather he took the plunge and went with the minority by shooting certain sequences on the IMAX format. Not to sound pretentious and all, but I have had it up to here with this 3D thing. I was hoping it would have died down by now..

3D haters need to shut up. It's here, it's staying and used well it's absolutely brilliant. I honestly think that having a go at 3D is just hipster bullsh*t. It's the same thing we had 10 years ago when digital started being used, and as an argument it's as redundant as it is short-sighted. Hugo was fantastic in 3D, and I refuse to accept that movies like Prometheus and The Hobbit won't also be adored with an extra dimension. I honestly, honestly think that 3D used well enhances the viewing experience as much as any well-used craft such as VFX, lighting, sound design etc. I look forward to the day that the hipsters shut up and go back to moaning about remakes. RUINS the cinema experience? Grow up!

@ThePrestige85 - I actually think the approach some filmmakers have of shooting some sequences in IMAX can be equally distracting as bad 3D; having the screen format keep changing shape takes you out of the film and reminds you of the technique. I'd rather IMAX developed a camera quiet enough for an entire film to be shot that way. I think the fact that this film represents not only Scott's return to science fiction after 30 years but also his first film shot digitally and in 3D rather than converted... that's something worth getting excited about. We just need the cinema chains to be prepared to spend more money on their projector bulbs and project the movie at a decent brightness level.

@NickyC - Moaning about 3D and/or being bored of every film made in the last thirty years remade badly and pointlessly is 'hipster b******t'? That's a new one on me.

The only film I've ever seen that was worthwhile seeing in 3D was Avatar and the problem with that was Cameron took so much of his time and effort perfecting the 3D that the story is average at best. Prometheus is being filmed in 3D which is always better than post-production 3D but if it effects the story negatively then it's not worth it.
