Robert Downey Jr. says Iron Man 3 cameos are unlikely

“Certain new pals of his could be useful”

Robert Downey Jr. has been sharing some more nuggets of information regarding Iron Man 3, and suggests that his Avengers co-stars will be unlikely to make an appearance.

“The whole Avengers thing was such a relief and such a confirmation of Kevin Feige’s vision for this all along,” said Downey of The Avengers’ box-office success. “As Kevin has put it, the next step after that is to bring in someone like Shane Black and - without pretending that the Avengers don’t exist - find a way to go back to a kind of re-investigation of Tony’s world.

“He thought it would be, one, fun for the audience and, two, would rock in a different way than The Avengers. But we can’t help it - everywhere you look now in every Marvel movie there are opportunities where certain new pals of his could be useful. So they’re in the atmosphere, so to speak, but I wouldn’t expect to see them on the ground in this one.”

Sounds as though there will be plenty of references to the Avengers then, if not actual appearances from specific team members. It certainly sounds as though the film will follow directly on from what has gone before.

POSSIBLE SPOILER UPDATE:

Latino Review are reporting that Downey Jr.'s choice of words may have been very careful, with reports that Stark will head into space to meet the Guardians Of The Galaxy at the end of the movie. There's an Iron Man toy that seems to confirm that Downey Jr. will don a deep space suit too (although, we all know that toys can't always be trusted).

Directed by Shane Black and co-starring Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley, Iron Man 3 opens in the UK on 3 May 2013.

'It certainly sounds as though the film will follow directly on from what has gone before.' What? You didn't already get that from the trailer when Tony mentions how everything changed after what happened in New York? I seriously can not wait for this to come out!

So long as it makes sense why no one comes to his aide. Which I'm sure it will. Shane Black's no fool. (Although you would think that S.H.I.E.L.D. would have too much invested in him to let something happen without putting up a fight). Looking forward to seeing how this fits in with the S.H.I.E.L.D. tv series. Hope the series and the films don't ignore each other, but rather add to the depth of the overall experience.

Is it possible RDJ was referencing the wasp? Because Stephanie Szostak is still the only actress on imdb to be unnamed, and she does sorta resemble the wasp, from ultimate avengers...

Actually now I think about it the wasp got her powers from Hank Pym's Pym particles, or she's a mutant in the Ultimates, but they'd probably have her gaining powers through ant man, so she wouldn't be "in the atmosphere" for IM3.

Probably the same reason Spiderman didn't help the Avengers, he has other stuff going on.

It'd be kind of cool for Ruffalo to get a cameo, not as the Hulk but just Banner and Stark hanging out and then Banner leaves before any bad stuff happens. I'm really hoping for the Guardians of the Galaxy bit though, at the end of the Marvel NOW Iron Man he builds a deep space suit and flies off into the unknown where he's set to join the Guardians for their new comic book series, I'm hoping in the post credits sequence for Iron Man 3 we'll see him fly off into space and then it just ends without us knowing where he'll end up until next year when GotG is released. I mean think about it RDJ as Iron Man would sell the film to casual movie goers without them even having to see the trailer.

I am fine with no cameos in the story as long as they still do an annaul post credits scene.
