Robert Redford discusses Captain America role

Describes his character as "the head of S.H.I.E.L.D."

Robert Redford's decision to sign on for Captain America: The Winter Soldier was quite the piece of stunt casting, with the veteran actor taking time out to explain what attracted him to the project.

"The Captain America thing is just a very simple thing I wanted to do something different," explains Redford. "I wanted to do something just to be different. Something bold, different."

"And that felt like a good thing to do," he continues. "That was it, nothing more to it than that. Well, it’s bold in terms of expectations, I guess."

He also went on to describe his character as "the head of S.H.I.E.L.D.", which is intriguing since Samuel L. Jackson is already on board as Nick Fury. Will Redford be playing an earlier incarnation of Fury (setting up the name as more of a cover identity than an actual person), or is he even higher up the chain then our favourite one-eyed badass?

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and co-starring Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will open in the UK on 4 April 2014.

Hmm, interesting. I wonder if he's going to be the head of shield in the flashbacks to the WW2 stuff that was mentioned. I can't think of anyone in the comics who is higher placed that Fury while he's director of Shield. Even when he gets outed, the command got handed down to Stark and maria Hill in the books. Wonder if Redford will be a new character not from the comics, although i doubt it. They'll probably find some obscure person who appeared at some point.

I agree SiMan, I can't think of anyone from the comics he could be ... Apart from Nick Furry Sr. and SL Jackson has been playing the "new" Nick Fury Jr. introduced to the comics in 2012 ...

What about those silhouetted guys at the end of The Avengers? I think maybe he might be one of them, perhaps they're in charge of S.H.I.E.L.D.
