Robert Redford set to join Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Marvel sequel adds Hollywood royalty

Robert Redford is in talks to join Marvel Phase 2 sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, according to a scoop by Deadline.

The erstwhile Sundance Kid is set to join the comic-book universe as a top-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and by Deadline’s reckoning, he could appear across multiple movies in the same vein as Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. Perhaps it’s a leap too far to imagine Redford cameoing in the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show, though.

While it’s no surprise to see such a celebrated A-lister on a Marvel movie - the studio have previously bagged the likes of Jeff Bridges, Ben Kingsley, Anthony Hopkins, Tommy Lee Jones and more - Redford is an unexpected coup, given his association with independent filmmaking (via his involvement with The Sundance Film Festival).

It’ll be interesting to see Redford going toe-to-toe with Jackson though, as he’ll hopefully do in Captain America 2. There had been previous hints that CA2 might explore Nick Fury’s origins as a soldier, although that has yet to be confirmed.

Starring Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie and Emily VanCamp, Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens in the UK on 4 April 2014.

Will Captain America 2 be a highpoint of Marvel’s Phase 2? Drop your comments below…

Surely he can't outrank Fury though. Wonder if he could be playing an older Dum-Dum Dugan. He was in the first Cap already though, and wasn't exaclty young in that (think it was Neil McDonogh who played him)

Good call Si, he could play an awesome older Dum-Dum. I don't think he will be, however. Pity though.

have i got it wrong, or is sam jacksons nick fury the second leader of shield with the name Nick Fury, isn't he supposed to be the originals son or something? i'm not up on my marvel continuity, not having a doctorate in advanced mathmatics and chaos theory, but i think it could be possible . I'd love to see Redford with an eyepatch playing Fury senior, maybe in flash back or out of retirment. let's be honest, it would be amazing to see him and jackson play father and son.

@dangoodfellow- Only in the mainstream universe. The reason that Samuel L. Jackson is playing Nick Fury is because, in the Ultimate Universe, Nick Fury is Samuel L. Jackson's doppelganger. Jackson gave them the right to his likeness on the condition that, when Nick Fury was used in a movie, they'd have to cast him in the role.
