Roberto Orci to direct Star Trek 3?

Paramount thought to have tapped screenwriter for directorial debut

After weeks of rumours concerning Roberto Orci's reported interest in directing Star Trek 3, Variety is claiming that Paramount has offered him exactly what he wants…

According to the report, Orci has received an offer from the studio to head up the film, having been recommended by long-time collaborator J.J. Abrams.

Orci is already helping to write the screenplay alongside J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, while Abrams will be returning to produce, having been forced by scheduling issues to relinquish the director's chair.

Orci recently split from long-time writing partner Alex Kurtzman in order to pursue new opportunities, and has long been thought to have been nursing directorial aspirations.

Paramount has yet to announce official confirmation as yet, with the film expected to land in cinemas some time in 2016.

Would Orci be a good pick to direct? Tell us, below!

This is the man who co-wrote Transformers. Let that sink in for a moment.

He also co-wrote the other two Star Trek movies, and he comes recommended by J.J. Abrams who directed them. Speaking as someone who enjoyed both films, I don't see how this is such a bad thing.

@endofdays2 : can you honestly say you've never had a "bad day at the office" or done some work in your professional life of which you were not especially proud? So he wrote Transformers? Doesn't mean he'll be awful as a director, it's a completely different discipline, look at Ben Affleck, mediocre/terrible actor in some people's minds, yet his directing career has been outstanding ... just saying :)

I have a bad feeling about this. Just look at what happened with Transcendence and Blade Trinity, it's ashame because I really like the new Star Trek movies :-(

Roberto has no directing experience at all and you hand him a franchise like this for his debut, Paramount have balls I'll give them that.

I will admit his scripts aren't terrific but at the same time they aren't terrible. I found both Star Trek movies to be his best work and I'd be ok with him directing. It could be worse, Miqchel Bay could have got his hands in it!

At least Bay has directing experience though. Directing a movie is completely different from just being a screen writer.

i don't like being negative but I'm glad i gave up on the new trek films after Into Darkness. Im not saying the new films should be like the old films, id just rather watch the old films because i had connected with the characters through tv, in comparison the new films feel hollow because these modern story lines move to quickly for character development , partially due to Orci's writing style. i actually preferred old kirk's outdated sexism to new kirk's petulant arrogance
