Rumour: Dwayne Johnson to star in Terminator 5?

Could potentially go head to head with Arnie

With Arnold Schwarzenegger having recently confirmed his involvement in Terminator 5, the rumour mill has been busy generating potential co-stars for him to square off against, with Dwayne Johnson the latest name to be mentioned.

According to WWE Examiner, one version of the script is being specifically developed for Johnson, which would raise the enticing proposal of this generation's premiere action-man going toe to toe with his predecessor.

Meanwhile, the site goes on to make an even more outlandish claim that the new film could be a prequel, possibly set in the 1940s or '50s...

"One theory is that Schwarzenegger’s remarkable ability to protect the Connor family in the 1940s or 1950s, with antiquated weaponry by today’s standards, ultimately inspired the machines to develop a terminator in his likeness," claims the breathless report.

We'll take that theory heavily salted, but Johnson's involvement certainly seems plausible, and we could well believe that Skydance is considering him for a key role. The 1940s setting? Not so much...

Or... Arnie was sent back TO the 50's, got stuck and had to power down and wait, and Johnson is the newer model sent back to protect the Connors against the aging model. That's about as plausible as I'd be willing to watch, after the last 2.... *shudders*

Would old man Schwarzenegger want his thunder stolen by a younger, fitter guy like The Rock? I doubt it. Stars have big egos. Although Arnold would struggle to do a lot of the physical stuff as he's nearly 70 now. They'll need some expert make-up or maybe CGI effects to make Arnie look like he did in his prime, Terminators don't get old after all. As for the 40s or 50s setting, sounds a bit like Back To The Future for me. After we've seen Arnold waving that big a*s mini-gun around in T2, I don't think we'd settle for antiquated guns this time. You can't step backwards from gunplay like Alien 3 did after Aliens, there has to be more in a sequel not less.

I've always said that they should step away from arnie as the terminator and that they should use his age as part of the story. Either have it so he's the head of Skynet or the evil creator of the terminators and they are made in his image. That way they can get away with not using terrible face capture or Arnie creaking his way through another performance. Having him as a human villain would work really well, and then possibly have the rock as some sort of resistance fighter in a different part of the future world who is sent back to kill Arnie.

paulchadwick That sounds like the only way I would get some enjoyment out of this, the whole made in his image thing you should go pitch that to them before they really mess it up

Arnie as a killing machine with no emotion? Yes. Arnie as an intelligent scientist capable of overseeing the construction of said killing machines? Ha ha, no. The only way i could really see it working is in maybe a cameo. A broken down old terminator they reactivate for information a la Bishop in alien 3. Make up can cover up some of the obvious age issues and there would be no clunky action scenes. I'm a no for Dwayne Johnson though, not sure if I want to see this series turn into a new expendables.

If I had my way I would tie Term Salvation in with Terminator 1 somehow blend both universes though it sets it up nicely I just feel there is more to be said

Arnold looks pretty great for his years, and as the skin over the top of the robot skeleton is living tissue, it's perfectly plausible that said tissue would age. I don't think his vintage is a problem; he's never done tonnes of stunts anyway. Arnie's always been more of an imposing physical presence who is good with a gun or a sword rather than some lightning-fast martial artist. And with CGI and wire-removal, he could actually be more involved in the action than he ever used to be. But I think The Rock is wrong for this. Both Michael Biehn and Robert Patrick were wiry guys, the polar opposite to the Austrian Oak. They need someone short and lithe and athletic as a visual counterpoint, not another big lumbering lug.
