Rumour: Viggo Mortensen wanted for Snyder's Superman

He's apparently top of the list to play Zod

Heat Vision Blog are reporting that Viggo Mortensen is at the top of the list to play villain General Zod in Zack Snyder's Superman: Man of Steel.

Brit actor Henry Cavill was cast as Supes several weeks ago, but there have been no more official casting announcements since then.

Now, according to Heat Vision's sources, Mortensen is the top choice of Snyder and producer (and project godfather) Christopher Nolan.

Mortensen's involvement will depend on his availability, as he is near to closing a deal to appear in Snow White and the Huntsman.

Apparently talks with the actor haven't officially commenced, but he is dubbed a "person of interest", who is being talked about seriously.

Kevin Costner is in a similar position, being the favourite to take on the role of Pa Kent.

There are still three major female parts left to cast; this has been the source of much rumour, but no official announcement has been made yet.

It's hard to argue with the thought of Mortensen as Zod though, as he's got the gravitas and physical presence to be a real threat to Superman.

With shooting imminent, we're sure to hear some more official casting news soon… we hope.

Would you like to see Viggo Mortensen as Zod? Or are you hankering after another actor to play the villain? Tell us now!

Sons of Gondor! Of Rohan! My brothers. I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of Men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the Age of Men comes crashing down, but it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West! Viggo would make an excellent Zod.

i don't see how superman can work in today's movie climate. he's a dated hero. that costume was designed in the 30's, how can we still take the red-pants-worn-over-the-blue-costume anywhere near seriously? and he's a boy scout. the squeeky clean image doesn't cut it in a comic-movie market rife with wolverine's and batmen. snyder will nail the action, but doesn't anyone else feel like superman is a redundant character?

Well look at Captain America, I know it's only a trailer but they've made a man wearing a blue condom on his head look badass.

The obvious sarcasm aside, the comments were fun to read. But why must there always be the point made that Superman is outdated? It would be more accurate to say the POV of Superman by "Hollywood" is outdated. A lot of mythology has been passed by, here in the purportedly 21st Century. I'd be more concerned about humanity being outdated, than one of its bed time stories. Up up and away. . ..

What happened to staying clear of Donner's movies? Why is every film maker scared of making someone other than Lex and Zod in the movies. I mean i suppose if Viggo is Zod they may be going with the story line that happened in Smallville, i.e. Zod either created or manipulated Brainiac to destroy Krypton. Next Ursa isn't even a comic book character well not until recently. She and Non were made up for Donner's movies. So why they feel it's necessary to bring her character back is beyond me. How do we know viggo isn't being cast as Lex? how do we know viggo will claim to be Zod at the start but as the movie develops, we find out there is not Zod and it's Brainiac himself. Remember from the info that is out there. Clark is out there discovering himself. Doesn't know who he is, that he's an alien, of Jo'rel or Zod or anything else krypton related. Furthermore as per this law suit thing, even though they can make this movie, they cannot mention Krypton or Kryptonite or a dozen other things, so that'll be weird. That said, I've learned that one should always trust without question in Nolan. However, he has left someone else in charge. BUT is still the exec producer, so in a way may have say so over a few things whether Snyder will admit to that or not. Nolan is Warner's golden goose, not Snyder. I don't think Snyder would have been hired were he not having the same vision as Nolan. So from that point of view trust in the makers.

There are two excellent origins stories that were released recently - Superman: Earth One and Superman: Birthright. I personally hope they try to adapt the Birthright graphic novel. It explained a logical reason why he puts on the suit and tries to be who he is, while also placing it in a somewhat more grounded reality than other comic books, much the same way that Nolan did with his batman films. From what i've read about this new film though, it doesn't look like they're following that story line. i'm not sure Zod is the best villain to start off with. Usually the 'Negative' version of a hero is better placed for a sequel.

..Also, with regards to Supes being outdated, i'm not so sure he is. Okay, so the costume isn't going to be issued to our armed forces any time soon, but you can get away with that if he wears it as a tribute to his Kryptonian heritage - if that's how they dressed on Krypton, who are we to argue. The ideology of him may be outdated now too - the American way and all that, but if they can focus on the theme of men with great power and what rights they have over the rest of us. Superman could make the world do whatever he wants, so they could focus on his reasons why he doesn't get involved with political motivations - he just saves people....why does he do this???? - surely thats a theme Nolan can get put into the film. And Snyder can make it look cool!!!
