Russell Brand to remake Drop Dead Fred

Universal replace Rik Mayall…

Universal seem to think a lot of great films weren’t good enough the first time around. Forget swine fever – they’ve got remake fever. And the latest redo to drop on their schedule? Drop Dead Fred.

The studio have lined up Russell Brand to step into Rik Mayall’s manic shoes as the grown-up but still insane imaginary friend of a shy woman who’s forced to move back home after she loses her job.

Say what you like about Brand, but this is perfect casting. Fred always was a bit of a gurning pervert.

Universal certainly seem to like him – he appeared in Forgetting Sarah Marshall for them, and they’ve let him headline the spin-off Get Him To The Greek.

And Fred is a much better proposition for the remake treatment than Videodrome was yesterday.

Videodrome is perfect, but Fred has elements that could be improved on – Phoebe Cates’ slightly wooden performance for one (sorry Phoebe).

Oh, I definately fall into the 'subhuman scum' camp. Being shameless seems to be some sort of validation for being funny, well it isn't and he isn't. Still, this isn't quite as bad as the news relating to the Mockney-Goth-Mop as the lead in a remake of 'Arthur'. "Do you know what I'm going to do, Hobson?" "No. I don't." "I'm going to have bath, oooh! Lots of lover-ly bubbles all over me you-know what, all wet and horizontal, fnar-fnar. Whoops missus!" Go away, you craven apology for a person.

Rik Mayall is a legend and made the original a great bit of fun, where as Brand is a talentless hack. How he's become so popular I'll never know.

I like the original, and I'm not much of a fan of Brand but it does seem like a role for him.

Drop dead Fred was a dreadfully unfunny film! Sounds perfect for Brand! He is both dreadful and unfunny!

Uh, first of all, this IS c**p. From what i heard Universal "wants to give it a beatle juice feel" I'd like to add, this is going to be yet another Hollywood FAKE where they incredibly cluelessly remake something to "look" like something that was genuine, while purposely and strategically leaving out the thing of importance that made the original thing great for humanity. These people should be vaporized by extraterrestrials and then go to effing HELL. Which they will. Rick Mayall IS AMAZING, this d****e is nothing special. The remaking of this film should be illegal. Fear not people of earth, rise up and impeach these tyrants who invade your lives and force this mediocre garbage on you. And if today these forces seem overpowering remember we will arrive to save the world. We are the Elohim. And each and every one of you are better than these idiots who "run" your world. 7
