Russell Crowe is Jor-El in Superman: Man Of Steel

Gladiator actor lands father role

Russell Crowe has landed the key role of Jor-El, Superman’s biological father, in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot.

While Kevin Costner has already signed on to play Jonathan Kent, Clark Kent’s human father, Jor-El is Superman’s Kryptonian father who died during the destruction of the superhero’s home planet.

The role was most famously brought to life on screen by Marlon Brando, who played the part in Richard Donner’s original Superman.

Footage from that appearance was also resurrected and re-used in Bryan Singer’s more recent Superman Returns.

It’s not hard to see why Snyder was keen to cast a big name in the role, and Crowe’s gruff swagger should bring the requisite pomp to the part.

Jor-El’s wife Lara is yet to be cast, though Dark Horizons report that Crowe’s Gladiator co-star Connie Nielsen is in negotiations for the role.

That means we should probably expect to see a flashback to Superman's origins in Snyder's system reboot.

Man Of Steel opens summer 2012.

Crowe? Or no? Think he'll do the part justice? Or did you have somebody else in mind? Talk to us below...

Other than the casting announcements so far, I think the Africa thing is the only sure thing that is confirmed as a scene to take place in the reboot. I wouldn't worry about it, it'll be max 10 mins of the film if that much. It's just to establish Clark trying to do good using his abilities without really knowing why is he and what is meant for him. There's too much emphasis on the fact that this Superman has to literally kick enormous a**e for half the film to be set helping tribes in Africa. In regards to Crowe - i guess he'll have to lose weight and be clean shaven, as he does remind of you Phil Mitchell meets Hollywood. But i generally do admire him, other than Master and Commander, i do like his movies. Excellent choice overall. To have picked Daniel Day Lewis whilst that would have been a major coup, it would have again been trying to bring back aspects of the donner movies. Day Lewis would have done to Brando, what Brandon Routh did to Christopher Reeve. So in fact it's good he wasn't cast.

Whew, didn't see that one come coming. Could be an interesting choiceof actor for Jor-El, especially as Crowe willl be taking a bit part in a massive movie. Can't remember the last time i saw him in a film where he wasn't one of the lead characters. Makes you wonder how much screen time is going to be devoted to Krypton and Jor-El (although, there is an excellent novel i've read called the Last days of Krypton which is basically about all of the events leading up to the destruction of the planet and Zod's military coo. That could make quite an epic movie in its own right). With regards to the 'Africa' part of the film - i'm hoping that they are going to follow the 'Superman: Birthright' graphic novel. That books starts off with Clark in Africa and works very well. I always thought that book would make the best superman film.

Crowe's stepping into Brando's shoes, eh? I guess that explains why he's been bulking up the man-mammaries lately...

I just thought of some interesting facts: Both actors playing Superman's father in Man of Steel have played Robin Hood (Jo'rel - Crowe and Jonathan Kent - Costner) Crowe and Connie Nielsen (90% likely to be Lara van El) both played in Gladiator Henry Cavil, Crowe, Nielsen and Costner have all played in Swashbucklers (Robin Hood, Gladiator and Count of Monte Cristo) Henry Lennix and Crowe both starred in 'State of Play' Amy Adams played the the obese girl turned thin through kryptonite milkshakes who ate her victims in an early Smallville episode of season 1.
