Sacha Baron Cohen playing Freddie Mercury

He will, he will rock you

Freddie Mercury

Sacha Baron Cohen has landed the lead role of Freddie Mercury in a biopic about the infamous Queen frontman.

It marks the Borat and Brüno star’s first high profile lead in a film since his turns as the outrageous mock doc characters, which he shepherded from the small to the big screen in 2006 and 2009.

It could also be considered a chance for the actor/showman to dabble in more high brow affairs, considering the pedigree of people involved in the Mercury flick.

Who? Namely scriptwriter Peter Morgan, whose effusive scribbles have previously transformed Helen Mirren into Queen Elizabeth II and Frank Langella into Richard Nixon.

Deadline report that the film will track Queen’s beginnings and lead up to their 1985 Live Aid appearance – which many consider to be their finest hour.

Will Cohen be spending time in the studio to record his own versions of Mercury and co’s songs? Considering the man’s recognised as something of a master chameleon, we wouldn’t be surprised.

Isn't Sacha a tad bit too tall to play Freddie ?

Bad idea. The difference between Mercury and Cohen is that Freddie had talent. It would be like Steven Segal doing a rom com on ice!

Anyone else thinking Mika could be a great left field choice? Wouldn't solve the height issue though, he's about 7ft an' all!

Sacha looks a helluva lot like him and aside from the fact that he's generally ridiculous and inappropriate, you have to admit he's one of the best in terms of getting into to character and staying that way. Plus he can sing, like reeaallly well. I love Mika but you can't just throw a good performer in a movie and expect him to get the acting down tight just like that. You've gotta give SBC more credit, he's seriously talented.

Please dont destroy the image of Freddie Mercury by this disaster waiting to happen! Sacha Baron Cohen is neither Sherlock Holmes or Freddie Mercury, stop think and protest this absurdity! What can Graham King be thinking ? Sacaha Baron cohen cannot act, does not actually look like Freddie Mercury and looks slef conscious and terrible in movies, except when making fun or characters who's belief systems he hates with a passion enough to mock them by acting them out in a crazy and if you can call it convincing way This is Freddie Mercury, and SBC will never ever do justice or look half as good as the Great as this actor who deserves this role , for at least he can actually act, knows about singing and is the right height and can act every stage of Mercury's life. THEY PORTRAY REAL HUMAN BEINGS Freddie was a serious musician not a chracter to poke fun at- his tage craft was not a joke it was unequalled! his ability to relate to a crowd was unequalled he made it look easy the very idea of someone who uses constructed loony characters and when he steps out and tries to act is a unanymously hailed as a disaster by nealry every conscious human on earth should play such a complex and great fgure like Mercury is outrageous in itself!
