MGM seems to have vintage horror on the brain. Not only is the studio embarking upon a remake of the seminal Stephen King story, Carrie, but another reboot is in the offing in the form of paranormal fright-fest Poltergeist.
The original movie was directed by Tobe Hooper from a script co-written by Steven Spielberg, in which a family finds themselves terrorised by a group of malevolent spirits when they discover that their home is built upon an ancient burial ground.
Sam Raimi had long been rumoured to be the studio's pick to direct the project, but The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed that the Evil Dead mastermind will instead be on production duties.
The script is currently being put together by David Lindsay-Abaire, a former Raimi collaborator on Disney's Oz: The Great And Powerful, who previously won a Pulitzer for his work on the stage version of Rabbit Hole, a play he would go on to adapt for the big screen.
The film is very much in the planning stages at this point, with a director expected to be announced in the coming months. And regardless of whether you think the movie needs a remake in the first place, it's good to know that MGM have got a bona fide horrorphile on the case...

The second remake announced today (after Carrie), looks like Hollywood is eating itself to death.

Carrie was announced a week or 2 back. This i am a bit disappointed with as the original is one of the films that reminds me of my youth. Next they'll be announcing a Goonies remake and at that point I will give up on the industry.

Enough with the damn remakes! I hate to think what movies will be like in ten years if this doesn't stop.

How long before a remake of The Godfather is announced? If LukeSween hasn't given up by then, we can do so together. Mind you, if a money crazed hack like George Lucas can keep "improving" his work and making a fortune from it each time, why WOULDN'T studios just keep recycling their films instead of actually pulling their collective fingers out and, y' know, being creative? Still, all we have to do is refuse to see these remakes and they'll stop making them. Curiosity's a terrible thing, though - I sometimes watch them to see JUST HOW bad they are. Which makes me as bad as the twonks who will ignore an original becasue it's more than ten years old or in black and white, whatever. Worse, probably - I know better.
