Despite a decidedly mixed critical reaction on t’other side of the pond, Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island stormed straight to the top of the box office this weekend.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a US marshal investigating the disappearance of a criminally insane patient, the flick pocketed a tidy $40m during its opening weekend. It’s a record breaker for Scorsese and DiCaprio, giving them both their biggest opening ever.
Meanwhile, soppy Garry Marshall ensemble Valentine’s Day and the ever-present Avatar clung on to second and third place, the former taking a further $17m, the latter $16m.
Harry Potter wannabe Percy Jackson fondled a not-particularly-remarkable $15m, meaning its future as a film franchise is looking pretty bleak. And The Wolfman dug its claws into fifth place with a small haul of $9.8m.
The rest of the top ten looked pretty similar to last week. Romantic drama Dear John bid a fond farewell to the top five, slipping to sixth place with a meagre $7.3m, while Dwayne Johnson’s cringe-worthy Tooth Fairy snatched $4.5m from the tots. Daylight robbery, if you ask us.
Finally, Oscar contender Crazy Heart, John Travolta’s From Paris With Love and Mel Gibson’s acting comeback Edge Of Darkness all fleshed out the rest of the top ten with $3m and below.
Will you be catching Shutter Island come 15 March?
