Scott Derrickson directing Hyperion

Day The Earth Stood Still helmer sticks with SF

BY Total Film Jan 30th 2009 17:17PMFILED UNDER: Movie news

The Day The Earth Stood Still director Scott Derrickson has agreed to direct sci-fi adventure Hyperion, based on Dan Simmons’ novels for Warners.

Simmons’ books – Hyperion and The Fall Of Hyperion – are set in the distant future where a space war threatens the titular planet, home to the 'Time Tombs' - large artefacts that can move through time - guarded by a monster called the Shrike.

Trevor Sands is penning the script, which will compact both novels into one.

It remains to be seen which of Derrickson’s bubbling development projects – including Paradise Lost, also at Warners – will make it out of the cauldron first.

Have you read Hyperion? Are you worried that the man who - arguably - fumbled the Earth Stood Still remake is taking it on?

This film should not be made. The books are much to good to be pared down into 2 hours of hollywood shlock. Good luck to Sands and Derrickson, but it will most likely turn out to be another "Dune."
