Shia LaBeouf turns against 3D filmmaking

Exclusive: The Company You Keep star criticises technique...

Robert Redford and Shia LaBeouf were at the Venice Film Festival yesterday discussing new political thriller The Company You Keep at the Disaronno Contemporary Terrace.

The movie, Redford’s first acting role since 2007’s Lions For Lambs, sees the Oscar winner direct himself as a former '70s anti-war radical forced on the run when LaBeouf’s brash young reporter exposes his true identity.

And going by LaBeouf's press conference comments, it appears the Transformers: Dark Of The Moon star is enjoying his foray into more serious drama, and is glad of the chance to hang up his 3D specs.

“For me 3D doesn’t extend the medium at all, it’s just another way of looking at an explosion. But who knows, maybe the future’s in 3D dramas, I don’t think it’s likely.”

The 26 year-old, who in 2010 called the third Transformers installment “the greatest 3D movie ever made”, continued : “You can only see something explode so many ways. The oldest magic trick is the human heart, that’s a magic trick no one can really explain to you and doesn’t get old”.

Meanwhile, his director and co-star Redford chewed over the moral landscape of his new flick.

“Shia’s character’s story is about the personal lives of people who could get hurt by it. The question is, on his journey, did things happen to him that would cause him to rethink it? I wanted the film to be a question, whether he would push “send” or not, and leave the audience to maybe think about it.”

The Company You Keep doesn’t have a release date yet, but is expected to hit cinemas in the new year.

Disaronno presents “Disaranno Famosi – Storie dal futuro” a series of meetings dedicated to the cinema of the future.  For more info go to www.beoriginale.com.

Saying 'Transformers 3 is the best 3D film ever', is just like saying, 'That dog turd, is the best dog turd I've ever seen'.

It annoys me when bad actors who mostly seem to be in the acting game for the fame and fortune pretend to be all philosophical and deep.

I am not a huge fan of 3D at all but reading this just makes me want to punch Shia on the nose.

I appreciate what Shia is trying to do. Get back to something of value. But the problem is his onscreen persona needs to be fixed first. He needs to stop playing naiive jerks or know it alls even in serious fair. He needs to remember how to be a humble and sympathetic presence. This takes time and care.

Looking incredibly earnest and humble are not the same thing. I think he can get there and hopefully Lars Von Trier is the man to make it happen.

Shia Laboeuf can mean 's**t the beef' in French. If someone interesting was slating 3D I would maybe pay attention.

To be fair, he was pretty impressive in 'Holes' and 'A guide to recognising your saints'. I think he has had enough of blockbusters giving him a bad rep.

i like Shia, i know he may sound like an a*s when he speaks but overall i tend to enjoy his films & think he's a good actor just wish he get away from blockbusters, a Von Trier film is a massive chance to show what he's capable of

He's got a point to be fair-everyone keeps telling me to get very serious dramas on blu-ray, as if seeing Denzels suit in clearer details helps matters. Explosions in 3d are ok but hardly revolutionary. But he's still insufferable right now

I agree to some extent what he says, the £d movie is generally like trying to watch a film thru sunglasses. Each new 3D film that comes along says it is amazing in 3D, take Dredd. It's not a bad film, but 3D didn't make it a game changer. Transformers 3 was good, I agree it was much better than many that came before it. The trouble is everyone judges a film on how good the CGI is now and not the plot, characters, tension, build up, twists and turns etc. We have forgotten what makes a good film. As for Mr Laboeuf, well he has a habit for me at least, of making me think twice about seeing anything with him in it. Indiana Jones, Wall Street 2. He just seems to have this knack of killing the film for me, as an actor he is okay, he just needs to make right decisions. Lawless tonight, hopefully he don't kill that as well

Realmarcwhelan, Shia is a good actor in my opinion. He is watchable and doesn't ruin any movie. He was great in 'Disturbia', ' A Guide to Recognising your Saints' and 'Wall Street 2'. He was fun to watch in 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the crystal Skull'. I have no doubt about his ability to carry a movie so I never think twice about seeing him in a new movie. He has done a few bad movie choices (' Eagle Eye' ), but tell me what actor hasn't. I am confident that he will be fine in 'Lawless'. That's why I can't wait to see it. He is not a great actor but he is fine. He is a much better actor than his 'Transformers' co-stars Megan Fox ( not much of an actress. She is wooden and looks as if she is half asleep or she is miles away. I would think twice about seeing her in any movie because she is the one who can kill a movie if she is a lead actress. She is gettting small roles so she is not in a movie long enough to ruin it.) and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Her acting is awful. She'd better stick to modelling ). I agree with him on 3D. Not all movies need to be shot in 3D. 3D is a con. With the exception of Avatar, 3D looks more like 2D than real 3D. I will think twice about paying a few extra pounds to see a 3D version of a movie. If 3D looks like 2D it adds nothing to the viewing experience.

He's got a point. 3D movies is a gimmick. I hate them. Watching Avatar in 3D ruined the beautiful colors.
