Shyamalan talks The Last Airbender

“I don't know how to make a PG movie so it’s going to be much harder…”

His latest film (horror thriller The Happening) is only just opening across the world this weekend, but M Night Shyamalan is already looking ahead to the future.

He’s busy preparing to film an adaptation of Nickelodeon’s adventure cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender, which sees a world riven by conflict between elemental forces.

Comingsoon.net chatted to the director and got him to spill about why he decided to tackle the project, which is very different from his usual thriller fare… “"It was just the story. I just loved the story," he told the site. "I loved the characters in the story and I felt like I could be me inside this larger canvas of this very long-form movie. I think it inherently had kind of family issues and serious larger topics -at the centre, genocide -all kinds of stuff. It has Buddhism, Hinduism, things I'm interested in.”
