It’s hard not to feel sorry for Rafiq Qureshi, accused this week by the News Of The World of trying to sell his daughter, Rubina Ali, for £200,000.

Qureshi was approached by the News Of The World’s infamous fake sheikh who claimed he had seen Slumdog Millionaire, and wanted to lift Ali out of poverty by taking her to live in Dubai.

The article claimed the paper was acting on a tip-off from a “concerned friend and neighbour,” insinuating that Qureshi was planning to sell the girl before they arrived.

It also claimed that Qureshi and his brother began haggling over Ali’s price with the paper, stating that he was “unhappy” with the money he received for Slumdog.

But in an interview with the BBC Qureshi has claimed that the newspaper used a “dirty” undercover operation. "They tricked us into this fakery but we came out unscathed," he said.

Despite being put into a position of “great temptation” Qureshi said: "They played dirty with us, but we didn't accept any money from them. My daughter is not for sale."
