Maybe we’re just a bit too cynical, but we tend to give a wide berth to any movie described as either ‘life-affirming,’ ‘heart wrenching’ or ‘exhilarating.’
And early buzz surrounding Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire used all of those phrases. It hasn’t helped that the plot seems to revolve around a vacuous game show, either.
Judging by the clip below though, our early warning radar has been malfunctioning. Far from being a movie full of sugarcubes and anthropomorphic bunnies, it appears to be grounded in the harsh realities of the slums in Mumbai. And there’s no sign of the Indian equivalent of Chris Tarrant anywhere.
So if you’ve so far given little thought to catching it at the cinema, take a look below. We think it will change your mind.

Right....so you are put off seeing a film by good word-of-mouth? Maybe that's why "The Spirit" was given 2 covers by TF over the past six months or so.
Also, it wouldn'y take much research to find out the film isn't all about the gameshow

I saw this film at a screening on Wednesday... and putting off seeing it is a BIIIIIIIIG mistake :)
This scene is quite near the end of the film, but it just shows its appeal that anyone can sit in at any point and not feel as though they're out of the loop. It really is fantastic.

Anyway, loved the film. It was like Forrest Gump, only actually good!

The plot of the movie did not seem interesting to me at all but I saw it anyway because of the overwhelming critical reception. After watching it I was unmoved. It was completely predictable and there was nothing profound or original about it. 3 stars at best. P.S. could somebody please explain to me what's so incredible about this film.

It's a great film because Boyle has managed to span a grisly glimpse of the Indian underclasses with an energetic and emotional fairytale/love story.
His decision to upgrade his Indian casting director to co-director is a masterstroke. As a result, the film has all the pulse and spirit of a Bollywood movie, tempered with Boyle's restraint and storytelling clarity.
Terrific script, wonderfully structured, great performances, great music - and the funniest comic latrine scene evah.

Firstly, you are a film magazine, you shouldn't be giving any film "a wide berth" before you've even seen it. That's a ridiculous statement to make.
Also, this is a Danny Boyle film, the man who gave us classics like Trainspotting and 28 Days Later and Total Film is unsure whether to see it?
Shame on you.

I will agree that the film has spirit and good music, but there are many better films that have all of the above. May I recommend The Curious Case of Benjamin Button or Milk. Those are much better choices than Slumdog Millionaire.

Well in the weeks until those films go on release, SM is a brilliant way to start the new year at the movies.
Why? Because it's life-affirming, heart wrenching and exhilarating...!

Heart wrenching ? A bit of an exaggeration don't you think ?
Sorry about the other recommendations, I live in the U.S. where those films have already been released.
