Talk about cold feet… Sony has decided to shut down production on Steven Soderbergh’s new pic Moneyball just three days before it’s due to kick off shooting.

Despite the presence of Brad Pitt in the lead, the studio’s boss Amy Pascal apparently wasn’t happy with the latest draft of the script as penned by Steven Zaillian.

According to Variety, the film is now in “limited turnaround”, which means Sony is effectively dumping it but Soderbergh and Pitt are free to offer the project to other studios.

They’ve apparently spent the weekend shopping it around the likes of Warners to try and get a different company to take it over.

Another option is Sony replacing Soderbergh and hoping against hope that Pitt doesn’t walk alongside him.

It’s unusual for a film to be shut down this late – particularly given that Pitt was on board and that Soderbergh had already spent three months in pre-production with a full budget ready to shoot.

Based on the sports best-seller about Billy Beane, the baseball manager who found success by using lower cost players picked via a computer system, it was to be Soderbergh and Pitt’s latest project.  Now? It’s up in the air…
