Sony planning female-led Spider-Man spin-off

Release pencilled in for 2017

Fresh off the back of Kevin Feige’s comments that Marvel Studios would struggle to find room on its slate for a female-led superhero movie, Sony has announced that it will be releasing such a project in 2017.

Deadline reports that the studio is currently putting together a female-led spin-off from the Spider-Man franchise, with Black Cat seeming the most likely candidate.

Black Cat was last seen in a virtual cameo by Felicity Jones in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, appearing as an assistant to Harry Osborn, although alternative characters such as Spider-Girl and Silver Sable have also been mentioned as possibilities.

According to the report, Sony has already approached Lisa Joy Nolan (wife of Jonathan) to pen the script, with a shortlist of potential directors currently being drawn up.

Few people would have had Sony down as the key superhero studio to launch a female-led franchise, but with Warner and Marvel continuing to prevaricate, kudos to the studio for stepping up to the plate. It’s not before time.

Who would you like to see the film focus on? Tell us, below!

Boy, Sony only have one superhero property but damned if they aren't milking the hell out of it. Good on them for taking a chance that others seem to be hesitant on.

Sony bascially read the article yesterday and thought "Quick! Let's do just that..." Marvel Studios game-plan was so well conceived, everyone else wants a slice...no matter how sub-par they'll all probably be.

So, let me get this straight...Marvel = always awesome.....Not Marvel = automatically bad.

No, but the others' band-wagon jumping is getting on my tats. I await Friedberg/Selter's "Cross-Over Movie" parody...its only a matter of time.

as far as I'm aware, it's Doctor Strange who gives Felicia her "cat-like" super powers... how are they going to bring that, knowing Strange is marvel?... how about a spiderwoman movie?

Would be funny if Sony beat Marvel and DC to the punch with a female lead superhero movie. I know there's been ones in the past but we haven't seen a female lead movie since the comic book genre really exploded on to the mainstream.
