Spider-Man reboot dumps girlfriend Mary-Jane

Five actresses up for new love interest role

Emma Roberts

Spider-Man really is getting a kick up the red backside for his upcoming reboot – even his love life is being given a spring clean, with traditional girlfriend Mary-Jane chopped out of Marc Webb’s re-do.

According to Heat Vision, script pages for a lead female role have been sent out to five key actresses, but they do not reveal the name of the character.

Applying our super powers of deduction, it’s not hard to imagine that the love interest this time around will be the flaxen-haired Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker’s other comic book squeeze.

Previously, Bryce Dallas Howard played her in Spider-Man 3. Of course, this being a reboot, Howard won’t be reprising the role.

Instead, Sony have their spider senses tingling at the prospect of Imogen Poots, Ophelia Lovibond, Lily Collins, Teresa Palmer and Emma Roberts playing the part. Though none have officially auditioned, all are apparently in the running.

On the villain end of things, rumours persist that Spidey will this time be battling The Lizard, and Sony have previously approached both Christoph Waltz and Michael Fassbender for the part.

Shooting swings into action in December, so expect more casting details to drop before then.

Does Spidey’s love life really need a reboot? Talk it out below…

Good, i want to see spiderman fighting with villans not mincing about over some scritter. They should have fired her off after the first one. Still, the most pointless reboot ever, what is the point?

The Gwen Stacey storyline is I think probably one of the better spidey stories along with his origin, its a pity the first Raimi spiderman movie used it first.

This film is going to seem fake-new actors playing the parts,no Mary Jane, different story by the sound of things etc... Reboots are always stupid ideas-they always seem so fake.

Whilst I hate the whole reboot idea, going with Gwen Stacy in 1st film (assuming there are more!) is logical as per Spidey storyline.

The problem with Raimi's version wasn't Mary Jane it was Kirsten Dunst ! I think Emma Stone would make a great Mary Jane Watson. It's ashame they won't be bringing back Bryce Dallas Howard, she was one of the few good things about Spiderman 3.

pointless remake! Also taking Mary Jane totally out of the equation or story is messing with spider-man lore. She is his future though, so maybe if more movies are made. But if sticking at least with some sort of spider-man tradition, then the gwen stacy angle is a good bet. The more and more plot details that emerge about this, the more i worry! Got a feeling it could suck, big time!

That's a shame, I liked Mary Jane, but to be fair I guess it does make it more interesting to introduce a new love interest, besides Kirsten Dunst is adorable as Mary Jane so fair enough not to ask an actress to fill her shoes: don't s**t where you eat y'know

Kirsten Dunst was a horrible Mary Jane. She was nothing like the comic book character who is a bubbly, self assured, effervescent, sexy, confident, flirty vixen that so enamoured Peter when they first met. I wasn't much of a fan of Raimi's almost cartoony version of Spiderman. I'm not a fan of this Spider-TEEN reboot version either. Sony really need to hand back the film rights to MARVEL STUDIOS so that one day we can get a serious MATURE treatment of the web-slinger, just as the books "Amazing Spiderman" have been for the past 40 years or so. I'm sick to death with these so called adaptations that do little justice to the books, shows no respect and makes a mockery of the original source material. I want to see a film about Peter Parker the MAN and the adventures of his alter ego Spider-MAN.
