Star Wars 3D in cinemas by 2012

Will the Force be strong with this one?

Star Wars

Star Wars is set to return to cinema screens in 2012 with 3D re-releases of all six films, seven years after Revenge Of The Sith called the whole thing off.

George Lucas is finally happy that enough cinemas worldwide are now equipped with suitable 3D equipment to warrant the re-issue, and has gotten to work converting the first prequel Episode 1: The Phantom Menace for screens.

In a bit of a stinker plan-wise, Lucas plans to release Episode 1 first in 2012, and then the rest of the series will follow in consecutive years based on how well Menace fares. In other words: you have to watch Phantom Menace again!

Still, pod-racing in 3D should be enough of a consolation, as well as the anticipation of seeing all those classic moments (Carbonite freezing! Yoda training! Death Star bye-bye!) re-rendered on the big screen.

Of course, you could always just settle for re-watching the original three on your suped-up home entertainment system, but where’s the fun in that?

Meanwhile, Lucas is planning on releasing all six films on Blu-ray next year, with “upgraded picture and sound quality” alongside brand new deleted scenes and new-to-Blu features.

Will the 3D re-releases be a hit? Impossible to see, the future is. Still, we wouldn't mind catching The Empire Strikes Back up there again.

Will you be queuing up for this in 2012? Or has Lucas screwed with his franchise enough? Debate below…

Head vs Heart: Head says, No don't give him the money (again); but the Heart says, Star Wars on the big screen - hell yeah!!!

Talk about milking Star Wars, has Lucas not made enough money from it.... here's an idea... come up with something other then releasing Star Wars in 3D, then spare us in a few years time having to buy the Special Edition version on DVD that has a few extra midgets superimposed in it walking around!

watching Han step on Jabbas tail is bad enough in 2D let alone 3D!

Somebody please stop George before he milks Star Wars and Idianna Jones dry !!! South Park's episode where George tries to enhance Raider's Of The Lost will come true in 2014.

George is a talentless waste of space. He did nothing before SW, gave us all an amazing story with SW, then spent the rest of his "career" milking it for all its worth. Then milking a bit more just to make sure he's got as much as he can. I cannot fathom his need to mess up a perfect trilogy, and then force us to watch him do it again and again.

The only reason I'm looking forward to this is because I've never seen any of the Original Trilogy on the Cinema Screen (the prequels can suck it). However I hope not too much stuff in the original Trilogy is changed for 3D. The Phantom Menace could probably use some 3D, only because it needs something other than a boring story and crappy CGI and I'm sure Darth Maul falling into that hole would look cool in 3D. To be honest I'd much rather see the the Original Trilogy on the screen as the original cuts of the 3. Because that's those were the films than blew everyone away. Not the pointless added CGI to the 2004 versions.

why is it that george lucas is trying to re-write history? I was really looking forward to the blu ray versions coming out, only to find that it is only going to include the special editions re-making of the originals (greedo shooting first, weird beeky thing in the sarlacc, Hayden Christensen as anakins force ghost in jedi ). Why ??! I know its his properly, but its stood the test of time better than the prequels, even though episode II had its moments, and people reacted negitivly to the ballsing about with them. Think im just going to pick up the dvds with both the original and remastered versions, as my blu ray will upscale it anyway. Wont be the same, but will certainly appear better than what will be overpriced and a betrayal. Rant over

Isn't it about time george had another idea for a franchise, doesn't he realise that Indy and Vader are stale as month old bread by now?

If George has enough sense he'll restore the Greedo scene to it's original, but remember you get invisible matting in the Hoth battle. I's sure he will have Yoda as a digital character in the Phantom Menace instead of the awful puppet, just don't meddle with Empire.

i think George should leave the saga as it is. not meddle with it forever until the day he's gone and Lucas Film will screw it up as well. He already re-released the saga over and over again and i am not looking forward to the 3D of this one. I have the saga and that's the way it should be. 3D will of course ruin the saga. There's nothing to put on 3D like TPM Episode 1. Like i said before: the way the saga is... leave the way it is and we already have the saga and i like the way it is. he will keep on re-release it and re-releasing it until he's tired of it. and most of all, he said he's working on THE CLONE WARS and other SW stuff and why need to see the saga again? don't we all have the movies? Don't meddle with it right mhhaslam? the special edition and the prequel special edition of TPM Episode I is to be left alone.
