Superman to be directed by Chris Columbus?

Is it a bird? A plane? Nope, just a new rumour

Superman is currently being regenerated under the watchful gaze of Chris Nolan, but could an altogether more unexpected movie-making Chris be taking the director’s chair?

According to a report over at the Superman Homepage, famously schmaltzy director Chris Columbus could be the WB’s current favourite to bring the Man of Steel back to the big screen.

Their insider source has revealed that an "offer has been sent out to Chris Columbus to direct the 3D Superman reboot for December 2012”.

Though we had only ever dared to dream that Chris Nolan would be the one calling the shots on set, we would never have even considered Columbus as a potential helmer.

“David Goyer really wanted to direct but nobody from either studio think he's good in that arena," the insider goes on.

"He's great at coming up with story and ideas, like George Lucas. It's his execution where he's weak which is why people like Chris and Jonathan Nolan and Guillermo Del Toro have had the best results with his scripts."

Hoax or genuine article? We’re hoping it’s the former, especially as Columbus is best known for more kiddie oriented fare like the first two Harry Potters and the more recent Percy Jackson. Expect this to be debunked pretty sharpish.

Who would be your dream director for the new Superman?

Oh dear, this proves the big wigs at Hollywood studios have no damn clue what so ever. They should keep their grubby fat fingers out and leave the film making to people who know what they are doing. Too many films have left people wondering what might have been had a decent director been involved. Thankfully Mr C. Nolan is involved, and will have some say. Hollywood big wigs need to sign the cheques, nothing more.

Nothing against Columbus he did Harry Potter (good) & Percy Jackson (not so good) but this just isn't his forte or maybe the studio bosses still think Superman is 'kiddie' fare.

Ridiculous; even with Nolan's "influence" this still won't work. It'll be 3 steps back for Big Blue; surely finding a decent director for such a big project isn't difficult??? Mark Millar's been going on about doing for it for ages; get him on board, or a real fan like Kevin Smith (without Jon Peters producing) or curve ball......JJ Abrams.......

perfect choice, it would finally kill off a pointless franchise which died straight after number 1

I'll always cut Columbus some slack for creating two of my childhood favourites - Gremlins and The Goonies. Timeless modern classics, both of them. So, although there's no way this won't be debunked, it wouldn't be a bad choice if Nolan was a hands-on producer in every aspect of production, from casting to effects, just leaving the day to day slog to a competent hired hand. I can't see how a big name director would want to play second fiddle to his producer, allowing Nolan to make all the big creative decisions and take all the credit anyway. So whoever takes the gig, it's not going to be someone who is Nolan's equal, I'd wager. Lower your expectations a tad. I'd actually like Bryan Singer to swallow his pride and have another crack at it, with Nolan guiding the ship.

Chris Columbus? Will Supes be played for laughs? Actually I think this is just a classic case of mistaken identities, someone just confused the Christophers.
