Silent cinema made a big noise at the BAFTA 2012 awards ceremony last night. Black-and-white charmer The Artist took home seven awards, including the coveted Best Film prize.
The BAFTA jury clearly had eyes for only one film at the red carpet event, held in London yesterday evening, as The Artist also took home the Best Director, Original Screenplay, Lead Actor, Costume Design, Cinematography and Original Music awards.
Also getting some loving were Octavia Spencer for The Help and Christopher Plummer for Beginners in the Supporting categories, while Meryl Streep added another Leading Actress award to her groaning cabinet for The Iron Lady.
Meanwhile, Thor actors Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston both missed out on the Orange Rising Star award, which went to Adulthood actor Adam Deacon.
On the British side of things, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy nabbed the Outstanding British Film prize (and deservedly so), while Paddy Considine’s phenomenal Tyrannosaur was awarded the Outstanding Debut gong.

The movie was not worth 7 baftas, not by a long chalk. It was creative, relatively original by today's standards and mostly enjoyable, but i cant shake the feeling that this is pretentiousness winning through, that the people have to be seen to be liking it.

what?! best foreign language film not awarded to A Separation?! disappointing. I mean The Skin I Live In is a very good film, but Separation is a great one

I think the nostalgia element has been way too big a factor. In terms of cinematic technology,it is a step backwards and haven't seen it yet so shoudln't really comment but I really can't shake the feeling that it's gotten too much hype just at awards season and at any other time it might have been forgotten as just another novelty.

I am SO pleased The Skin I live in won an award! Really deserved it. Though the travesty of the night was Harry Potter winning best visual effects... over Tintin!? Come on...

Seriously ........Adam Deacon.....you have got to be kidding. Ugh I have lost all faith in the British public, that award should have went to Tom Hiddleston !!! And don't get me started on the bloody Artist.

@vincent0176 I think you should see this movie before making any assumptions. The artist won because it's was a well crafted, acted and executed movie. I was really hesitant about watching as i learned it was fully slient but once the movie started it was quite magical and I'm happy that it's been cleaning up at most of the awards show. now to the oscars!!

Dalidab if you think all those films are s**t and yet you like c**p like the resident evil films, I don't think you should be within a hundred miles of deciding which films get awards. It's idiots like you who got Adam Deacon the rising star award (and I like the guy, but he's no Hiddlestone).

I mean, if enough morons like you club together and vote for Paul WS Anderson films and c**p like Battlefield Earth, that doesn't make those films good, it just means there are a lot of idiots who can push a button. 'Stupid and tedious new homage to the real thing'? Thanks for proving my point about why a fat little unpleasant failed actor from Wakefield should never be in charge of a film awards.

Good to see "The Artist" walking away with what it did; did better than I thought! (Just to inject some positivity into the comment feed, which oh dear, seems to be dedicated to feeding the troll again...)

The Artist is a wonderful film and deserves all the recognition it is receiving. I think some people on here are judging without even seeing it. In my opinion, if you don't like The Artist then you don't like cinema in general, you certainly aren't "The King" of it, that's for sure.
